just took the bottle away from my 15 month old ds a few days ago and he has completely refused to take any milk from a cup. He drinks water from a cup beautifully. Once he tastes the milk though, he pushes the cup away. I feel terrible because he keeps asking for his "bot bot" and is very frustrated. I stopped based on my peds STRONG recommendation. However, I am worried because he is in the 5th percentile for weight and he is not a big eater. Any advice?? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the fact that your son is in the 5th percentile and your ped still insists on chucking the bottle is WEIRD. you have a SICK pediatrician. [ Reply | More ]

np: Being in the 5th percentile is fine, there's nothing wrong with it. [ Reply | More ]

nnp: ita, as long as there is no significant weight change. maybe he's just a small kid. [ Reply | More ]

well, we don't know the full story here, do we? maybe the kid isn't making sounds and the ped is worried about speech development or something. I'm stretching, I know... [ Reply | More ]

my son has been in the 75th - 90th percentile since birth (he's by no means fat, either), and our ped never "strongly" recommended giving up the bottle. [ Reply | More ]

So? It doesn't mean your kid is any healthier than OP's. Or that OP's ped is wrong. Frankly, I would ignore the ped because I tend to do what feels right for my kid when it isn't immediately endangering him. But that doesn't mean my ped is SICK. [ Reply | More ]

i don't get why it's ok to nurse a child as long as you want but it's so evil to use a bottle past 12 months. i always nursed my kids and they all weaned (my choice) by 13 - 14 months but my ped. never said it was necessary. is bottle feeding really that much harder on the teeth? [ Reply | More ]

op--ped says it is bad on the teeth and can impact on speech. 5th percentile is fine as he is a small little guy but has been gaining weight consistently. As a mother, though, I feel horrible that I am taking it away. Most friends I know who were bottle feeding took it away at 12 months, si I am actually late!! [ Reply | More ]

Give a bottle but try making the holes in the bottle slightly larger each day or so until you have a BIG hole. Also ave you tried giving it in a straw cup? [ Reply | More ]
