Is the East Village considered a neighborhood with good schools? In terms of looking to buy a new apt? We're looking at The Ludlow. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no, no. My kid is too young for school yet, I just know nothing about schools in that neighborhood and if they are considered "good" or not [ Reply | More ]

I think most of East Village is District 1, which is not a great district to be in for schools. [ Reply | More ]

They really are not such good schools. Yes, they're progressive, but they're also academically weak. If you compare either Neighborhood School or Earth School, which are the two "stronger" D1 progressives, with a D2 progressive public like PS 3, the D1 schools don't measure up at all. That's my district; D1. If you like progressive ed, you might be happy with one of the 4 unzoned progressive publics in D1: Earth School, Neighborhood School, East Village Community School or Children's Workshop School. But there's no guarantee of dc getting in, and none of them is strong academically. PS 110 general ed is considered up-and-coming, and their G&T is pretty good, but again, there's no guarantee of dc getting in to the G&T. Ditto NEST+m. There will also be G&T at PS 19 beginning next year, but if dc doesn't qualify you're out of luck, and even if dc gets in you'd have to be willing to be a bit of a pioneer, as the general ed there is still pretty bad so the school overall has a long way to go. There's also Shuang Wen, which is a dual-language immersion school for English and Mandarin, but the program is EXTREMELY demanding and I have no idea if they're still doing selective admissions or if it's by lottery now. Unfortunately, there aren't many good public options here. [ Reply | More ]

^^ There's also Shuang Wen, which is a dual-language (English & Mandarin) immersion school, but it's an EXTREMELY demanding program, and I have no idea how they're handling admissions these days. They used to take dc from anywhere but gave priority to D1 dc, and they were trying to get more non-Chinese families in to the school. But with all the DOE changes it may be different now.
