Moving to NYC. Dh just looked at a prewar building, 5th floor apartment. It has an elevator, but it is dingy and small. I have one kid and one on the way, so we will never use the stairs. Should we take it? It is otherwise great and in our price range. Just don't love the elevator... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i am a bit claustrophobic and worried about getting stuck in elevators so this would concern me, too. is there a doorman? that would go a long way toward reassuring me. also, check if a double stroller will fit in the elevator. our p&t just barely fits in ours. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure it's fine. But why would you "never" use the stairs? [ Reply | More ]

because i am pregnant and have a 14mo DS and i can't leave a stroller downstairs...so i'm not lugging my pg. ass, my son, and stroller up and down five flights... [ Reply | More ]

I'd keep looking especially if you will have a double stroller. Also in pre war buildings make sure the windows are in very good repair as there are often issues with lead pain on old window frames. [ Reply | More ]

it's ok to be picky about certain things (schools, sushi, and breastfeeding) but not elevators? lol. [ Reply | More ]

is this the only place you/your DH saw? you have to keep looking if you want to get something decent. on average i would say you need to see about 15 apts. to really like at least 1. [ Reply | More ]

if the elevator is that old and dingy then there might be a special assessment in the works for a new elevator- that happened to us and we got assessed 18k over 9 months. [ Reply | More ]
