how does this work? You have to make room for all 28 kids and teachers and parents who came along? [ Reply | More ]

what do you do with all these people in your crammed place? Can you opt out? Can you do it outside in the park instead? Do you offer food/drinks? How long do they stay? How is this possible in a place like NYC? [ Reply | More ]

it's called parental involvement. One parent is expected to stay home that day. [ Reply | More ]

right, and we all have jobs that allow this. MY dh construction worker doesn't get time off and neither do I. Not everyone lives your life. Not everyone has two parents at home. Not everyone has a home. [ Reply | More ]

sorry. I did not mean that some admissions person is coming to your home to interview the parents and look around. I mean as part of the curriculum the kids take field trips to each others' homes. That's what we heard at some open houses/tours we attended but I don't recall which schools that were. [ Reply | More ]

ah, I have no idea then. And the program sounds really stupid to me. [ Reply | More ]

it's not really stupid. It's about NYC neighborhoods and some other social aspects. [ Reply | More ]

np. I think a social studies curriculum where the dc can travel to various neighborhoods is a great idea. Having class trips to each other's homes is intrusive and pointless. [ Reply | More ]

My school doens't do this so my opinion doesn't matter, however - I disagree with this on principal. Public school is for the have and the have nots - in the classroom they are all equal. To make it a matter of policy that every child sees the other childrens homes is blatantly unfair. We happen to have a shelter child in our class. What would she do? [ Reply | More ]

ITA with you, but probably some people would argue that the dc living in the shelter provides a good teaching opportunity for the other dc. Sickening. [ Reply | More ]

the "shelter kid" in my child's class did a substitute visit where her parent came to class. the same is done with families that live a long distance away, or that choose not to have the class in their home. [ Reply | More ]

Never heard of publics doing this; MCS does it, about 5 kids go to other kid's home, have snack, they explore their neighborhood. GREAT experience. Kids draw and write about it and they put the work in an album. Not all parents participate (not all can stay home or want to host kids) but good experience to see how other students live differently/the same. [ Reply | More ]
