Any sociologists on? What is the purpose of OTB and state-run lotteries in a society like ours? Isn't it unethical to offer those things and run into the danger that people can get addicted to it and ruin their lives? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

This public policy person would argue it is done because by institutionalizing it you can make it reliable/fair and remove the criminal element. That said, I would take the gov't out of both of them for the reason you said OR at least allow them no money for advertising. I think the fact that there is a commercial for the lottery every six minutes on tv is despicable. [ Reply | More
