Come clean. We all know people whose perfectly deserving dds and dss are SO, and who are now agonizing over sending their dcs to their (unacceptable) zoned public, moving to the burbs, doing something illegal etc. What are your leading theories as to why they are in this position--and you aren't? because the DOE was trying to make the process more transparent and fair, even though they made a ton of missteps? We got into G&T a few years ago, when the process was much less transparent and inconsistent. I'm grateful, but we have neighbors whose kid was W/L at Hunter, smart kid, ended up at inadequate zoned public, and now they feel they must move out of the city. Unfair. [ Reply | More ]

how did he not get G*T spot? maybe hunter was a fluke? maybe he's not that smart afterall. I see nothing unfair about it. no system could be perfect now could it? [ Reply | More ]

She didn't do well on the G&T test at that school, but did great on the SB and Hunter onsite. The fluke was that she did so poorly on the G&T's test. There are no "false positives," but plenty of "false negatives," especially when testing 4 yr olds, which is just insane. I wish G&T would not start until later in elementary. DC would not whither in a mixed-ability K. [ Reply | More ]

All the 99 Olsat moms don't want to hear it, but the Olsat is a much less reliable indicator of intelligtence than the Stanford-Binet, which is a proven IQ test. [ Reply | More ]

^ it hasn't been validated for 4 yos. #2, Even on the most valid, reliable test in the world you get a certain amount of error. If the dc is having an off day, doesn't want to open up with the particular tester, whatever, it can depress the score. The SB and WPPSI don't really generate false positives - the OLSAT can, however, since it's multiple choice - so unless the dc was totally prepped it's not a fluke that he scored high. It almost certainly a fluke that the dc scored low on the OLSAT. [ Reply | More ]

my kid is brilliant(technically and actually)with consistent, a/x the board testing LUCK (Yes Proud Mommy-LUCK)This criteria is rubbish and fully inappropriate for the age groups encompassed. Can we just rest it and leave our amazing kids to develop according to their nature and not this twisted 'nurture'? sb-upper99, OLSAT ditto, erb 999999. SO????? Like the truth or not, there is more than a smattering of error and many kids will not receive the appropriate settings, due to this ridiculous assessment method and some absurdly competitive, divisive attitudes. It is imperative that we advocate for all children- as a group for the group- or we're all a bunch of dummies. [ Reply | More ]

I meant So What? not shut out; my child wasn't- but many are- and it is most certainly wrong. All this parental sniping only serves to let the DoE off the hook for their gross underservice and ineptitude. [ Reply | More ]

1. We were careful to scrimp & save so that we could afford a pretty small apt within the catchment of a decent zone. 2. We got lucky and got into Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

we would be in this position if we had not moved heaven and earth to get into a private with FA. DC tested in gifted range but did dinged from hunter/ anderson and no acceptable zoned g&t. option. [ Reply | More ]

I get your point, but I wonder how many did things like hired a consultant, applied to a broad range and was willing to accept a third tier by ub standards school? this is what I meant by moving heaven and earth and we did because we knew are public options were very limited. [ Reply | More ]

I consider my zoned public perfectly fine because I am not a status-chasing snob. Also, I think 4-5 year olds are best served by going to school near their house, not by "challenges." We can "challenge" her at home. She's going to PS 11. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't move into an area that I wouldn't be comfortable sending my dd to school in. And by the standards of this board, I'm surprised you're okay with ps11. [ Reply | More ]

It's great that you can afford to live in an area with a very good zoned school. Most of NYC can't. This is clearly a larger problem than this post can handle, but saying you would only live in a nabe with v. good choices sounds really condescending. [ Reply | More ]

prep schmep- hopefully it won't be crappy worksheets, administered by 2hr trained volunteers that this parent community continues to "prepare" their children for; There is so much enrichment out there and in our homes, not to mention the resonant power we'd have as a large, unified parent community to prepare our children to participate in. This process has really corrupted some folks whom surely weren't lunatics before this mess took over their lives. [ Reply | More ]

1) luck we got into a citywide. the whole way through we knew it was not a guarantee even with 99. 2) we toured about a dozen zoned schools and limited our apt search to only those within the cachement areas of schools we loved. This meant a sacrifice on our part to some degree -- right now we don't have as much space as we'd want nor do we have some amenities we'd like but we have a school we know our kids can go to that will be good for them. It would never ever occur to us to pick apt over school zone and hope for some miracle. [ Reply | More ]

In some cases, super pickiness. I know people with dreadful zoned schools who only put 2 choices on their D3 lottery...if they'd listed 84 or 75, would easily have gotten in, and those are good schools. Made similar choices on their gifted applications. Now they're scrambling. [ Reply | More ]
