FYI -- in new york, children who are entitled are also labeled "gifted". funny, isn't it? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

funny, moms whose kids are not gifted call everyone's kids who are entitled. its disturbing but expected, all this bitterness now. [ Reply | More ]

np: Mom with a kid who scored a 98 here, and OP is too broad but not incorrect. There are gifted gifted and then there are entitled gifted. [ Reply | More ]

But that results in kids who are coached for the tests. And I also question the good test taker (like my DS) vs. the truly gifted - I think the terms is thrown around pretty widely here. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. I think my dc's are really smart. but we can also afford extra resources like music classes, trips to museums, lots of books, and a lot of time with them (both dh and I work pt). we can afford to send them to a good private preschool and ongoing school. maybe they are truly gifted-who knows, we did not test them for g&t (they are in privates)-but certainly, they have a lot of "prep" [ Reply | More ]

We turned down our district G&T for our local zoned public. We were lucky to have a good zoned, otherwise I'm sure I would have taken advantage of DS's great test taking (but I would not have deluded myself that he is a genius and needs a specialized education). [ Reply | More ]

we are zoned for a good public too, so only applied to privates and would have sent dc's to this school (which has a g&t). but I think there is something very classist about this process, which klein et al tried to change [ Reply | More ]

too early to tell. In general, I don't think they should test 4 yo for giftedness-too inaccurate. not sure what happened with testing all the kids in lower grades across 5 boros though. [ Reply | More ]

does it really matter? all this splitting of hairs about truly gifted vs. just smart? if the kid tests well, learns well and is in the top 1% of his peer group, it makes sense that he would be a better candidate for an advanced program. not the kid who can't sit still long enough to take the kid, doesn't know his ABCs etc. the kids who can utilize these programs get them. nothing entitled about it. it is what it is. the end. kids who are in lower income brackets may not have access to the same resources as other kid. or may live in a poor neighborhood with high crime rates, no libraries, etc. less easy to test well if you are the latter [ Reply | More ]

np: I grew up very poor, and always tested into gifted/advanced classes. Many of the bright UMC kids in my school were not all that bright, but were in these classes with me. didn't make a difference. the world is full of people who are just bright going to the best schools and holding the best jobs. the really exceptional ones usually rise anyway. actually, I find the parents of the gifted ones to be the most difficult and entitled. it is hard to have an abnormally smart dc. it draws you in in a way that is unique and unhealthy. [ Reply | More ]

Well, it's like the flip side of SN in a way, to be profoundly gifted. And that's why the parenting would be different. But those moms are not the majority of the ones bitching here. [ Reply | More ]

op: REALLY gifted children ARE special needs. that is why they have G&T classrooms. these are for kids who truly need a special type of education. not for kids who can be coached. I know there are all types of kids/parents in NYC, but those who teach their kids the way to test are just plan awful. FYI, less than 1% of people are considered geniuses. (not me, of course! :-P) [ Reply | More ]

we certainly don't live an "entitled" life but I do have a very bright child who scores a consistent 99% on the G&T tests. we have been shut out of the citywides for two years now. what do you have to say about that miss smarty pants? [ Reply | More ]

children in NYC who are "entitled" go to private schools and the only gift they have is that their parents are rich. That does not mean that they are loved and cared for. So many parents here leave that for the help as well. [ Reply | More ]

people do it every where, with or without money.....kids of teen moms get left with "random family" members, midwestern toddlers are sat in front of the tv all day long, etc, etc, etc. Kids with wealthy parents who are distinterested probaably have kids who fare better than kids without disinterested non-wealthy parents. I have an unintitled kid who has been labeled gifted, all it meant to us was that we got a decent school instead of our zoned school which is not so good after 2nd. To us, it's not funny at all. We could not afford to move, we can't afford private, and we are deeply grateful DC tested into G&T. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I know exactly what you mean and ITA. I feel for the parents who don't have decent options, but the ones who do and are whining are just sucking resources from those of us who do not have the options that they do. [ Reply | More ]

i don't either, but as far as i can tell op is alluding to the greater prevalence of scores in the "gifted" range among mc/umc brackets. [ Reply | More ]

moreover, what op seems to be implying is that giftedness is nothing more than a result of a stimulating, enriched early childhood--an artifact of class privilege and not innate ability. [ Reply | More ]

np: Well, at age 4, this is a distinct possibility. Versus at age 9, where all the enrichment can't prop up the average student that high. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, signed mom of DC who tested as super duper gifted at age 4, but probably will end up just regular old bright by age 9. At almost 8, he seems semi-gifted I guess, but he's no Einstein. I just want him to be happy and enjoy learning. [ Reply | More ]
