rent the car seats from the rental car company....we do it all the time and the car seats are a pita for air travel unless you want them for the plane. [ Reply | More ]

I have one of those (it was a gift) and used it once...never again. It is heavy and difficult to maneauver. We travel often with our children and find that less is more. [ Reply | More ]

if the 1 y/o has a seat on the plane, you need to bring the car seat (the 3 y/o needs a seat, but doesn't need the car seat on the plane). also, there are often problems with the rental car seats - Avis once tried to convince my brother that his 24 lb DS could go into a Snugride with a 20 lb limit, and Hertz tried to give me one with a big crack in it for my DD. The rentals are also expensive - $10 a day, if you are going for more than a few days, you may as well just buy a new one. [ Reply | More ]

We have never had a problem...negotiate the car seat price ahead of time...we often get them for free. Also, if your or dh's work has a connection with a particular rental car co, you could get them free through that co. [ Reply | More ]

did you buy a seat on the plane for the one year old? If not, rent a car seat from the rental car company for that one! [ Reply | More ]

imo do not waste the money on a plane seat for the one year old unless it is a long international flight. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. Even on a 3 or 4 hr flight, it's a lot more comfortable for everyone if DB has a seat, especially if there are delays on the tarmac and you end up on the plane for 6 or 7 hrs (it happens all the time). It's also a lot safer for DB to be strapped into a carseat if the plane hits turbulence (which also happens more often than you think). [ Reply | More ]
