To those of you who are SOOO upset that your child didn't get Anderson and you're stuck with 9: go somewhere else. 9 is fantastic and we only want parents who don't act like it's some crappy choice. And btw, those horrible low-scoring sibs everyone is talking about, who are filling all the spots, puh-leeze. Who says sibs are automatically low-scoring? And also: I only know of about 2 siblings who even made the cutoff. There's room for all sorts of folks there. We just want nice ones, not crazy score-obsessed ones. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Are you going to be the Mom walking around the college campus that is a "safety school" to half to population, whining that the other students don't appreciate it as much as your angel does? [ Reply | More ]

OP: huh. I truly didn't think of it like this, since it's absolutely one of the best public elementary schools in the city. I also think folks who think their little darlings can only be happy at one school or bust--and an elementary school at that--are going to have long unhappy roads ahead of them. Not to mention the fact taht I've been so incredibly happy with the school that I think people are really over-reacting otu of ignorance. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that she has no idea what a great school it is. But many will be disappointed not to get anderson, especially for the MS, and because it is more status. that being said, they will be pleasantly surprised to find it is a wonderful school with great teachers, families and kids. Don't be intimidated. OR is just trying to make you feel insecure because she likely couldn't have gotten her dc in. PS9 is a great school, and people are so caught up in the citywide hype, that they have lost it. [ Reply | More ]

It's a great school, but the presence of G&T messes it up for everyone. The clear message there is that some of the kids (mostly white) are "gifted and talented!" and the other kids are equal of course, but...not "gifted and talented". We are sane, not score obsessed people who did choose to go elsewhere, bc this is not the message we want our dc to get. [ Reply | More ]

np: most G&T programs in most school districts around the country are in gen ed schools. very rarely do you have free standing G&T schools. so you may not want to give that message, but most of the country has developed gifted programs in the regular school [ Reply | More ]

Nope. Pro G&T actually. But not the way it's done in NYC. I have no idea how to actually fix the system, given how messed up it is, but the combo of G&T vs gen ed at PS 9 seems particularly toxic. Again, this is too bad, because other than that it's a great school. [ Reply | More ]

Are you there? I am, and do not find it toxic in the least. i think the gen ed is much more heterogenous than at other schools like ps166 9which I also think is a great school). I think you are speaking from the outside and have no idea really. [ Reply | More ]

actually the gen ed is quite diverse with many white kids many sibs of G&T kids who are white, as well as others. the high scoring kids are in gifted program, and the others are in gen ed as it should be [ Reply | More ]

Anderson ain't all that. Parents I know there say the teaching is inconsistent, some years are lost years. Plus there's that intense parent vibe. So glad we did not accept, though we would have if it was closer to our apt. [ Reply | More ]
