I'm a consultant in financial services, one firm wants me to provide references prior to submitting my resume. The woman that called me claimed it's the contract they signed with the recruiting firms. They won't contact the reference until there's an offer and I'm notified but I'm leary. Has anyone heard of this practice? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

are you workgin through a firm or on your own? this seems like something that they could handle. otherwise, I might be a bit nervous. of course, in this market in financial services, depending on the area, having a job is a good thing [ Reply | More ]

I would be working through this agency, with them representing me to their clients. [ Reply | More ]

What are you applying for? A consulting position? If so, references are standard upfront. For a staff position, references are generally introduced later in the process. What kind of consulting do you do? [ Reply | More ]

Then I would expect references upfront. I used to do KYC consulting work and I had to give references upfront; sometimes before I even gave my pitch. [ Reply | More ]

I understand and I also worked on BSA KYC projects, interesting. I don't want my references repeatedly contacted for dead end jobs. I'll call the firm and make that clear but I'm still nervous about it. [ Reply | More ]
