Here is the question of all questions. Tribeca Learning Center (PS150) or Lower Lab. This is killing me. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No question to me - LL [ Reply | More ]

Where do you live? That would make the decision for me. I prefer the more laid-back vibe at gen'l ed, but one class per grade bothers me, therefore, I would go by geography. FWIW, most of the LL parents I've met are an intense lot. [ Reply | More ]

aren't there only 2 classes per grade at LL? Is that really a big enough difference? [ Reply | More ]

It would be enough of a difference to me, but it's a matter of taste. Sometimes it can help to break up certain dynamics and mix up the kids. Probably depends on the group from year to year. [ Reply | More ]

where do you live? both schools are subpar to 234 or 89 with HUGE classes so if I were you and those were the only two choices, I'd go with convenience. [ Reply | More ]

PS 89 is figuring they will have 34 kids in 4th grade classes this coming fall (per their website). [ Reply | More ]

i'm in nyc. i just don't buy into any of this. at. all. my gifted child, yes actually gifted, goes to the local school with "regular" children and we don't worry about much [ Reply | More ]

thanks, if you're not being sarcastic. the funny thing is, i wouldn't be surprised if my child who will be in "regular" classes, does a whole lot better and is far less anxious than many of your anxiety-laden children [ Reply | More ]

NP - thanks from a parent sending her child to the local gen ed. Rather be a bug fish in a little pond with way less anxiety. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, but we don't do workbooks. Call it what you want, her comment comparing her dc to our "anxiety-laden children" was smug. Also baseless. Many truly gifted dc would find being in a regular class to be the more stressful experience. If her doesn't, great. [ Reply | More ]

"Truly gifted" isn't just a label you get from the SB and OLSAT. It involves a huge battery of tests and evaluations. But go on with your pronouncements. [ Reply | More ]

sigh. By truly gifted, I only mean that it's been established through assessments, not just the parents' opinion of their dc. And I realize "truly gifted" isn't a clinical term, but my intention was to include the full range of giftedness, not just the profoundly gifted, or the exceptionally or highly gifted. But please, YOU go on with your smug, idiotic attempts at put-downs. While you're at it, try to respond to the actual point. Which is that for many truly gifted dc, to be in a regular classroom is very stressful. So for the OR to make a pronouncement like the one she made, is stupid. [ Reply | More ]

That is a tough one! I would go with LL. You will get a better middle school that way, but the commute will suck!!! [ Reply | More ]

Re the question of whether gifted children need to be with their academic peer group or are just as happy or happier in a gen ed setting.. wait for it... IT DEPENDS ON THE CHILD. Some gifted kids do well anywhere. Some are at a big disadvantage in a gen ed classroom because they: 1. get bored and act out or withdraw; 2. have trouble making friends because their vocabularies and preoccupations are different than the other children's. It's idiotic to claim that just because your child doesn't need anything special, no other child does either. Remember how some babies sletp through the night easily and others didn't? Children are not all alike. Sigh. This should be obvious. [ Reply | More ]

I think you are continuing some argument in your head with someone other than me. I was simply wondering why someone would assert that LL would necessarily help you get into a better MS. If the school of origin played any part in the process. My dc qualified for citywide, but will attend a gen ed. I think dc will be happy there, but I just wondered if there was something I didn't understand about the MS process. [ Reply | More ]

In my ds' LL class, many dowtowners were weary of the commute quickly and carpooled or trainpooled. By 5th grade, they were ecstatic to find downtown ms. [ Reply | More ]
