OK, it's official. I am quitting my job on monday. I tried to do the WOH thing for 4 months adn I just don't think that this kind of life is good for me or my kids. Not to mention my poor husband. We haven't sat down for a home cooked, family dinner in months. DH and I are exhausted all the time. I don't have any pictures of my kids because I never go anywhere with them. I'm missing too much and i'm done. Work will still be there for me in 10 years. I'll go back then. For now I am putting on some comfy clothes and becoming a f/t mom. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It ain't easy to re-enter, even after 1-2 years let alone 10. If you can afford to stay home and you'll like it, by all means do, but don't assume you can just go right back to work 10 years later unless you're in some sort of field that is timeless. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry if I've harshed your mellow, but I've BTDT and it's hard. Men and even more so women in management are usually not so friendly to women returning to the workforce. I took some years off and it was really hard to get people to take me seriously again, even though I was willing to take a big pay cut. [ Reply | More ]

ITA, but it is hard to get people to take you seriously when you don't drop out of the workforce. Children are usually a liability for women. [ Reply | More ]

You know what? You're right. Forget about doing what is right for my family and for my happiness. I'm going to live from a place of fear. I'm going to suffer through lond days without my children, even though I want to be with them, because I am afraid it might be hard to re-enter my industry in 10 years. Decide from Fear! that's my motto! [ Reply | More ]

unless you work retail, this is totally true. one of the things that concerned me prior to pregnancy. which is why i envy women who had children in their 20s, they still have a long stretch to build an uninterrupted career. [ Reply | More ]

Good for you, but I am not sure how that will ensure that you have a family dinner? If I quit we still would only be able to eat together on the weekends. GL and have fun! [ Reply | More ]

It's true about what the above poster said about keeping your credibility at work as a mom. (couldn't respond directly to the post because I got kicked out to the login page). You are damned if you do and damned if you don't as a FT mom [ Reply | More ]

I did the same thing. Was a VP at MAJOR Media company. Doesn't really matter, though. My daughter was being raised by nanny whose values weren't the same as mine. Jobs will always be there. Not the same one, likely not the same money, but it will be enough. Staying home to raise my daughter is about being satisfied with what we have, not constantly needing more. Enjoy this precious time with your family. [ Reply | More ]

Congratulations! I had to go thru the gut wrenching decision myself and it was hard. But it was totally worth it. I sah'd for just 3 yrs (only 1 dc) and now changed career to a field that is more family friendly where I can have flexible hours. Sure, I might have made some sacrifice but it is, imo, worth giving my dc my full attention, being able to cook healthy meals... [ Reply | More ]

Good for you. You will only regret it on days your kids are driving you crazy and you haven't showered and you realize you haven't worn "grownup" shoes in over 6 months. ;-) but those moments will be brief. Ignore the bitter work mommies who will never have their small kids back but will have their awesome careers to hold onto when they're old and gray. [ Reply | More ]

You're an a**. Most people said congrats, a few cautioned her that it would be hard returning to work, hardly a bitter response. You sound like you are bitter, though. [ Reply | More ]
