I think that my dd (16mo) has poison ivy. May have been exposed last Sat, has been getting small read bumps all week - it didn't really click that it might be poison ivy until she got a small cluster on her head today. Isn't bothering her at all. This isn't contagious to others right? Does this warrant a trip to the ped? I feel like I go there too much. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it's not really the season for poison ivy (usually the poison ivy plant is poisonous later in the summer). if it is poison ivy, yes it is contagious. [ Reply | More ]

When I had poison ivy it was obvious within a couple of hours. And the rash was big, uneven and splotchy. Small red bumps all week doesn't sound like it [ Reply | More ]

Just for the record - poison ivy is NOT contagious. It's the oil from the plant that causes the rash, and before you bathe, you can transfer that oil from your knees to your head or hands. But once you wash your body, there's no more "contagion". The only possibility is if the oil is still on the clothes you wore or your shoes, and you touch them again and then touch someone else. But assuming you've bathed since the exposure, someone can touch the rash and not get poison ivy from it, and it isn't spreading from place to place on your body. [ Reply | More ]

OP: no, I am not. Isn't heat rash smaller flesh colored pimples? This is red and it gets inflamed (that is the only word that I can think of). [ Reply | More ]

I'm definitely no expert so seeing your ped might give you peace of mind. My ds once came out of school with a huge rash on his cheeks, neck and chest. It was so obvious even the teacher commented on it, as did another parent, so I decided to take him to the ped that day. Turned out it was just a heat rash, exacerbated by sitting in a hot and humid un-airconditioned classroom for 6 hours. But I did feel better having it looked at. [ Reply | More ]

^^also, I do think poison ivy would definitely itch, so probably not that. [ Reply | More ]

sounds like it could be strep-which isn't always itchy, is always contagious and is sometimes unaccompanied by any other symptoms. Call ped; I'm sure they'll swab top AND bottom. [ Reply | More ]
