My 3yo is having a lot of nightmares, scared of the dark, etc. and he's getting no sleep at night. He's got huge circles under his eyes but he won't take a nap during the day without me there hugging him. What could be causing all these nightmares? His latest nightmare involved my husband fallign asleep in his car and turnign colors, and now my 3yo won't go near DH in real life. I was sitting with him today relaxing and my eyes started to close (I was nodding off) and he flippped out and said "OH NO Mommy, now you too!" and started crying. Does anybody know what all of this means? I am so concerned about his emotional/mental health. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that sounds pretty extreme. Has someone - babysitter, older sib etc - let him watch scary movies or something? Has some trauma happened? [ Reply | More ]

I am always with him, and I am pretty sure he hasn't seen something like that on TV. Nothing traumatic has happened, but he does have a new younger sibling and is toilet training. Other than that, everything else is the usual. He's always been difficult about sleeping and scared of the dark, but the nightmares are something new. [ Reply | More ]

hhmmm....I think you should call his ped and see what they think. It may be totally normal to have this kind of reaction to a new baby but it sounds a little extreme to me. They should be able to either put your mind at ease or guide you in the right direction to get help. GL [ Reply | More ]

To be honest I was like this is a kid - very clingy, easily frightened. Years later as an adult I finally see I had an anxiety and depressive disorder and meds have helped. I went through years of childhood therapy and it was really the meds that worked - perhaps there is some low-dose for kids? I would get a psychiatric evaluation. Seriously, nip it in the bud. I do think you should get him checked out. I don't know much about meds for kids, but maybe some sort of therapy or relaxation or even just him being able to talk about it (as much as he can at 3!) would help. [ Reply | More ]

this sounds a bit extreme to me. my 3 y/o has nightmares, and is able to express what happened in them, but we were able to talk through the idea of a "dream" vs reality enough that she knows the difference and is able to sleep [ Reply | More ]
