Is Little Red and VCS good school? To me, if you live good zoned downtown public, I want to choose aoned public. But many people who live downtown (zoned 41, 3, 234) send their kids to Little Red and VCS. Is it worth it? I would go for private if DC is accepted to TT.... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Little Red is better than VCS. The reason some people pick Little Red and VCS over their public is that they don't want to worry about not getting a good Middle School choice down the road. And VCS has exmissions people to help get into High Schools. [ Reply | More ]

Do they have smart kids? What kind of ERB are they looking for, 90+? All the smart kids I know who live downtown went to either TT or zoned public. [ Reply | More ]

Many choose Little Red since there is a high school too. Most kids move from all schools to different high schools. But it's nice to have a fallback. [ Reply | More ]

Most kids in K-12 schools do not change schools for high school. [ Reply | More ]

Does VCS have smart kids? Why do parents send DC there even you are in best zoned school? [ Reply | More ]

How smart? They don't require ERBs, so what distinguishes them? Also, how is the peer group as a whole? For example, would a 99 OLSAT kid be challenged there? [ Reply | More ]

We are downtown, applied to a few privates, but didn't apply to either of those, because wouldn't have been worth it to us vs the public options, or g&t. [ Reply | More ]

^^ also some people want their kids out of the public school system, full stop. They'd pay to go private regardless of peer group, academic reputation, etc. [ Reply | More ]

My sense is there is a range. Academics are strong in that their are tremendous resources for a broad range of kids. but if you want dc in a room with very bright kids across the board, and academics targeted at a high level, you'd be better off at other privates, or public g&t or excellent gen ed. In the lower and middle schools of both, the curriculums are progressive and have a lot of project work and learning is mostly creative-ish. But they don't teach skills at all. Kids from these schools need tutors if they want to go to good high schools. They don't get taught grammar or how to write different types of papers. And they use TERC Math which messes them up completely. So academically they're not so much. [ Reply | More ]

I posted right above you, and couldn't agree more. I was very underwhelmed by the academics they were showing on the tours at both of these schools. [ Reply | More ]

If I were zoned for one of those publics no way would I pay for LREI or VCS. They're very sweet schools and I suppose the facilities are nicer, but academically I don't think there's enough difference to justify the tuition. I'd prefer to save my money and apply for MS. [ Reply | More ]

we know people at both schools. we toured lrei. i would do public over either of these schools. the one good thing about lrei is that it is visibly diverse, more so than most schools downtown, plus there is a lot of diversity that you don't see as much at other dowtown schools (single sex parents for example) [ Reply | More ]

I don't think they follow the progressive education model as much as they used to, so if you want progressive, you are better off at a 3 (though even they are changing as demographics of area change) or at one of the e. village schools (if you are D1). I also don't think lrei is well run [ Reply | More ]

We live downtown and applied to Friends, UNIS, Grace Church, Packer and Saint Ann's. We are zoned 41/3 and would have chosen public over LREI or VCS, so didn't apply to either of those schools. I was on the fence about Saint Luke's, but ultimately didn't apply because it seemed a bit too small (plus K-8). [ Reply | More ]
