What. The. F*ck. I just got a $600 bill from ConEd for 2007 "unmetered" usage saying they underbilled us all year. Isn't that their problem? How can they come back to us a year later saying we owe them this arbitrary number? Every month it is around $18 and they are saying it should have been around $60. Can they do this a YEAR later? What if we refuse to pay since we are moving in two months? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes, protest it, that's their fault. not sure if you'll be able to get it back, but it's totally their problem [ Reply | More ]

that is what I think. Do you know of any other company that can come back to you a year later and say "sorry we underbilled you"?!?! The bill is ridiculous too - it's just one line on their letterhead - looks completely phoney. [ Reply | More ]

well, no - it does have a ConEd lady's name and number but for Pete's sake - do they expect people just to pony up $600 because of some error on their part? [ Reply | More ]

I will call tomorrow. Of course they close at 3pm. What do I say? What recourse do I have? Can they sue me or put this on my credit record? [ Reply | More ]

They can send it to a collections agency, which will go on your credit report. Also, good luck getting service from ConEd ever again... [ Reply | More ]

I agree it's unfair to bill you now, but did you really think your electric bill was right at $18 a month? You must have suspected something. I live in a 650 sq ft apartment, and my bill is always over $40, for not much usage. [ Reply | More ]

Yes - of course we thought it was low but we live in a small 1-bed walkup and never use the air and are never home to use the electricity either. We thought it was a great deal becuase it was an older building -- I don't really compare notes with other people on their electricity bills! However, I don't think they can come back and bill us for last year -- it is their problem to correctly monitor electricity use. [ Reply | More ]

I would suggest you pay it. I could affect your ability to get electric service at the next apt. Electricity is a regulated industry and my guess is, they will, in fact, be able to bill you like this. [ Reply | More ]

you are SOL. If you check back on your bills you will see they are estimated. They are allowed to do that until they get a reading. Often places restrict the meter readers, so they are allowed to bill for actual once they view actual usage. [ Reply | More ]
