My husband and I are ready for kids and we are currently trying to decide whether to try to conceive or adopt. I'm not even particularly sure what I want to ask, but I could use some input. I am also very concerned with the expenses of adoption because I have heard such a wide range of fees. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why are you considering adoption? Just curious. Very nice thing to do but you don't hear about many people considering it without ttc first. [ Reply | More ]

It has just always been something I've thought about since I was probably 17 or 18 years old. I've always liked the idea of giving a family to a child, rather than bringing another into the world. Up until recently I was only interested in adoption. [ Reply | More ]

i know two people who adopted domestically -- for one, it cost about $45,000 and for the other, about $30,000.... (private adoptions through attorneys) [ Reply | More ]

Mine domestic adoption was about 30,000. There is a fed tax credit that helps some (12K?) [ Reply | More ]

Friends just did a domestic adoption, around 20K, black newborn. White babies are substantially more expensive. There is a hefty tax credit for adoptions, I think it's 10 or 11k. [ Reply | More ]

but for some reason, not everyone is able to get the tax credit -- my cousin couldn't -- not sure why. [ Reply | More ]

well you have to pay that much in taxes to get the full amount, many people don't make enough. [ Reply | More ]

In general, white babies are not more expensive than black babies. This is a myth. Costs are not based on supply and demand but on legal fees, birth parent expenses, etc. In some states black kids are considered special needs (the idea being they aren't adopted as quickly), so there might be a subsidy, but in most cases, unless you are paying some kind of illegal premium for a white baby, the costs are equivalent [ Reply | More ]

That is not at all the experience my friends had. They were told it was very much based on supply/demand. [ Reply | More ]

We have done both -- had 2 children ourselves and then adopted #3. Both are beautiful, magical ways to have a family. The experiences are very similar in some ways and very different in others, obviously. We adopted internationally and spent about $25K. With each bio kid we paid about $25 copayment. [ Reply | More ]

We adopted both our children domestically. Total costs, all in, for each were around $20K, but that is widely variable. There are tax credits for people who don't make a lot of money and if you really don't make a lot of money, you can look into Foster-To-Adopt programs. [ Reply | More ]
