do you think kids "deserve" a dog ? if they seem to really want one and you have the room and all that, is a dog something sort of essentail in growing up ? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have some friends that agree with you and some that say if a child asks and asks it can be a great tool for teaching responsibility, a great friend, and a great part of growing up. DH grew up in manhattan and is freaked by animals not in cages or in tanks. I grew up with a dog... we're torn... [ Reply | More ]

a dog is not a tool. a dog is a living thing. you can use a bike as a tool for teaching responsibility. [ Reply | More ]

I think - I hope - you got the idea. I am not saying a dog is a tool like a bike. is that what you're trying to do ? Equate a living animal with an object like a bike ?! [ Reply | More ]

np i hate fish as pets. they die in the most horrible of ways even when you do take good care of them. ick... and air bladder issues. torturous to watch. adn often you're just told to flush them while still alive. [ Reply | More ]

pets are sort of a mixed thing for me. i love naimals, love taking care of them and having them around. at the same time, i think it's sort of cruel to keep them if you don't have a lot of outdoor space for them. but when is a kid ready to have one? when they help take care of the animal. i'd think it woudl depend on the child. that and just bc someone can understand this concept, doesnt' mean they'll actually do it. [ Reply | More ]

It is very nonessential. No matter how old your kids are, you will be the one doing the majority of the caring for the dog. So, do not get one unless you specifically want one yourself. [ Reply | More ]

I sometimes wish my DH would make the decision, but he defers to me and I know that it'll be all me... and a little the dc... but mostly all me and I feel I may be keeping them from something great because I don't want another thing on my plate... [ Reply | More ]

You don't need another thing on your plate if you don't want a dog. Your kids can get a dog when they are grown up. [ Reply | More ]

not essential, but nice as long as your willing to do the work. my aunt got talked into getting a dog and now it spends most of its time in the crate. it breaks my heart to see hime. [ Reply | More ]

yes, that would be awful... we have a yard and room. it wouldn't suffer that fate. [ Reply | More ]
