We have a sensitive ds with an october bday. He was nixed in Hunter round 2 and with a 98 on olsat, very doubtful that he will make anderson or LL. Our zoned school is 183. I was shocked to learn they have 5 k classes. I am afraid that he will get lost in the big numbers and find the environment way too chaotic. Any experience with 183 or thoughts. We can keep him in prek another year, but it has its issues as well. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What did you put 3rd or 4th? With a 98 you have a shot at 116 or 11. [ Reply | More ]

We toured 183 this past fall as part of the 151 lottery (which 183 is not a part of any more) and I was really impressed. For me, only cons were no computer room or computer instruction, no library (classroom books), and no language option. They said they have about 20 kids per K class (5 classes) which increases to 28 kids per class in 4th grade. [ Reply | More ]

np - 20 kids in a class is very good, esp for OP. It's the class size more than the grade size IMO. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have a computer at home? Computer instruction as part of a lower school curriculum is highly overrated, in my opinion. Ditto the foreign language instruction, unless it's an immersion program. The lack of a proper library would bother me; a classroom library helps, but it's not an acceptable replacement. [ Reply | More ]

I hope a 98 has a shot at LL. Do you think LL will be only 99s and siblings? [ Reply | More ]

I really think you have to trust your child a little more. No matter how many K classes a school has in the end all that matters is the class he is in. [ Reply | More ]

The overall size of a school does matter. What are lunch and recess like? Do adults outside their classroom teachers know children by name? What time do kids eat lunch? Are many of the teachers new to the school? [ Reply | More ]

Those are very small concerns compared to the size of the class the teacher is teaching. 20 is excellent. You should be very happy, many private schools have bigger classes. [ Reply | More ]

Also have a fall birthday ds who had a 98 SB and didn't get into Hunter. This was last year. Felt it would be best to keep ds in preschool (but we loved our preschool) and apply to privates. Got a great G&T spot, but didn't think ds was emotionally/socially ready for K, so passed on it. Glad we waited. Going private in the Fall. Making the call as to whether to send a Fall birthday ds to public K or wait is a tough one. GL with your decision. [ Reply | More ]
