new mom going back to work. looking to hire nanny for mon-thurs (40 hrs a week). what is the average going rate? in addition to the salary, do most people pay for transportation/metro card, meals, etc ... also, what is the general guidelines for vacation time, sick time, overtime, etc ... thanks so much!!!! average going rate is betw $12-15/hr, depending on experience and how long the person has been with you. I pay for Metrocard, but not everyone does. No meals, but she's welcome to eat whatever is in my fridge. She gets all the vacation and holidays we get, plus one week of her choosing. No rule on sick time, but we've paid all days she's taken off (only 1-2/yr). [ Reply | More

Cash, yes. I've also heard of half/half, but what's the point? You're still paying some of it off the books, if you're concerned with legality. Yes, my nanny does my ds's laundry. [ Reply | More
