repost for evening: Anybody ever deal with oppositional defiance disorder? Anyone know any professionals in NYC that can handle this with an adopted child? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I have not dealt with it but we did think DC may have had it. Working with a child psych we love. Not sure if she handles ODD but she would certainly know someone who does. [ Reply | More ]

I know someone who sent their dc to a special school for kids with this (can you imagine a whole school) but their kid was a bit older. I'm surprised a child as young as 3 would be diagnosed with this but you have my full sympathy -- must be v hard. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks. Honestly, it could be this, or severe PTSD manifesting. He can be a loving, cuddly, helpful, awesome little boy a lot of the time. But when the storm clouds blow in (often without warning) -- oh hell! [ Reply | More ]

NP: I just replied but don't see my post. We are dealing with possible PTSD in our adopted DD. We're going to see Dr. Jane Aronson - she specializes in intl adoption. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

We are starting with Dr. Aronson for our DD. She is int'l adopted and has different SN than ODD, (i think we're dealing with ptsd) but I've been going crazy trying to find the right professional that understands adoption. Our OT suggested Dr. Aronson, and we're going to see her in July. Try calling her office - they were very helpful for us. (Jane Aronson) [ Reply | More ]

if it is part of a ptsd and your dc was a crime victim (crimes can be broadly defined), safe horizon has a counseling center that is very well regarded. it is in downtown brooklyn. you can also look under socialworkers.org to search for someone who specializes in it as well as look for the apa (american psychological association) for someone who specializes in it in your area. gl. NP here: sensory issues are so much more than just "oh, my kid doesn't like socks" you" - For my ds (6 yo) it means: "I'm going to scream and cry for 30 minutes because my socks feel uncomfortable on my feet and they're either too lose or too tight or too big or too small or too itchy or too something else" - A major EXPLOSIVE tantrum occurs EVERY TIME he puts his socks on. And don't get me started about all the other VERY REAL issues my ds has that stem from his sensory needs. You couldn't survive a minute in my home with your level of ignorance. [ Reply | More ]
