with the candy and potty training thing, you give them the m&m or whatever whenever they pee or poo in the potty? Do you tell them ahead of time you'll be giving that reward? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I did tell ahead, but I didn't use candy -- I used something dd really wanted (a camera). But she was really old when she trained. [ Reply | More ]

np: how old? dd (just turned 3) just started training... we are doing chocolate chips, stickers and, if enough stickers, a present from a special box of treats... she was a little hard to motivate, you might say! [ Reply | More ]

yeah, we tried the sticker chart thing with a reward at the end, which ped suggested (when she turned 3). It worked, more or less, but after she got the reward at the end, she got bored of sticker charts and went back to using diapers. She was 3.6yo when she got the camera (and trained in about one day -- she knew only "big girls" get cameras, and that if she went back to diapers, she wouldn't be allowed to use the camera -- maybe harsh, but it worked). yeah, we're having some progress but i'm not convinced its here to stay. she is much more willing to wear underwear and pee for the babysitter. i work P/T and am home tomorrow so we'll see how it goes... [ Reply | More ]

good luck. It was a battle I just wasn't willing to fight with dd -- and honestly, in NYC, it's almost easier if they're in a diaper, b/c otherwise you're constantly trying to find a decent bathroom for them to use (TG for Starbucks). But my dd#2 is just 18 mos, and I've been putting her on the toilet (a little) -- she sees dd#1, and I figure she might train earlier. But I'm not going to push it with her either, just give her the opportunity. [ Reply | More ]

my kid loves food, so the treat was definitely a great way to get her on the potty. we told her ahead of time and it worked really well. one day of focused training is all it took. [ Reply | More ]

I would tell ahead as a way to encourage him to sit on the potty. The reward is also visible on the shelf from where he sits. Honestly, it worked to get him to sit, then he would get so excited and proud of himself that most times he forgot about the reward. A month later, the rewards were needed anymore. [ Reply | More ]
