I may win the award for dumbest post, but I am about to start potty training my 2 yo. I've heard to reward with M&Ms, but I hvae never let him hnave them b/c I've worried about choking. Is that a dumb thing to worry about? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

not dumb to worry, but at 2 they should be eating pretty much everything, right? except crudites, i guess. [ Reply | More ]

I guess. I still cut his grapes in half and don't give him nuts. I'm generally fairly laid back but am scared of choking. [ Reply | More ]

well, since there's no hurry to give m&ms, just don't. how about reward with something non-food (which is a healthier reward association anyway?) stickers, or popsicles if you really want to do food? [ Reply | More ]

That could work. he's really into photos of people/things he's familiar with. Maybe I could get him a little album and give pics for it [ Reply | More ]

I'm that way too. my dd just turned 2, and seems interested in toilet training, but our ped suggested waiting until she tells us that she has the urge to go. right now she tells us after she went. is your ds telling you this yet? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, he's been doing that and he also talks a lot about the potty and flushing. He's peed in his little potty a few times and was very excited about it. [ Reply | More ]

ITD. There are plenty of things kids at 2 are not supposed to eat, like hot dogs, popcorn, raisins, etc. I know a child who choked to death on popcorn at a movie theatre at age 3, so I'm with OP on being worried. [ Reply | More ]

or: ok, well, there's always a story ... just do what you're comfortable with, no one is going to judge you for NOT giving a kid candy. [ Reply | More ]

I'd definitely start with a non-food reinforcement first. If you need to go to foods, there's no reason to do M&Ms. Just do something small that he likes that is easy to cart around. We did one Smartie. Not sure if that's less of a choking hazard but dd loved them. [ Reply | More ]
