I am at total peace with my 99 DS going to our local, zoned school. I love the school and was not that happy on the NEST tour. I'm betting we'll hear he has a seat at NEST, but we're not going to take it. I can finally sleep! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

She listed a school that she wasn't happy with and will not accept a seat at that school. Since there are no waiting lists this year, she will be denying a child a seat at that school. [ Reply | More ]

The process required her to make her decision by then. Not now. With a 99 and NEST As her first choice, she's guaranteed to get that seat. And she knows she won't take it. By giving herself the luxury of deciding now, rather than 3 wks ago, she has taken away a seat from another kid. No wait lists this year. [ Reply | More ]

what the hell are you talking about? When you ranked the schools you did not have to know exactly what school you would send your kid to or not. Your kid scored well enough and that means you have another option. I ranked all 10 choices in D2 but at this point of time it looks like I am only going to accept my first 3, maybe 4 top choices. But then I might think differently in a week when we get our letter or when it comes to register my child. I like to have options. [ Reply | More ]

You should never have ranked programs where you would not be prepared to accept a seat. This process is not about giving you the widest range of options. You misunderstood (purposefully perhaps) this process. [ Reply | More ]

wow. you guys are something. I did not misunderstand the process. You are putting a meaning into it that I don;t think is there. My kid has a right to get a spot. And that she will get. If I accept it in the end or not is an entirely different matter. [ Reply | More ]

You know what? That seat that I gave up will end up in somebody's hands. When it comes to popular schools there will not be empty seats. The DOE is going to oversubscribe anyway. Then there will be retested and newly tested kids over the summer. In the end the spots will be filled. Maybe not with YOUR child but with somebody else's. [ Reply | More ]

I toured one of our district G&Ts this winter, and this is precisely what happened 3 yrs ago. So the 2nd grade class has only had about 15 kids in it since Kindergarten. Yes, it could happen. At a citywide, it's probably less likely to happen, but still. [ Reply | More ]

What all of you are forgetting is that they will likely OVERACCEPT - so by giving up a seat, it is helping all the others who do accept NEST achieve a class size that is in line with what it should be! If everyone accepted - the class size would likely be too big. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.12.08, 07:09 AM Flag

The problem is they will only overaccept by a certain margin. Whether the DOE accurately gages the extent of the problem illustrated by this OP is unknown to us. I hope they get it more or less right. None of us are forgetting that. But it's really annoying to see people like the OP who flagrantly disregard the rules of the process for their own personal convenience. [ Reply | More ]

Waitlist or not does not matter. The DOE over-enrolls kids in order to deal with the folks that decline a spot. Then there are kids that are going to be retested due to errors and kids that move to NYC over the summer and will be tested. Those fill the other spots. The implications of me not accepting a spot are nil in the greater view of things. [ Reply | More ]
