If by 18 mos your ds didn't have words (but understood loads and was very age-appropriate in every other way), would you have him evaluated by a speech therapist? Do you think your ped would recommend that? I live out of the country where they pay very little attention to these issues so I'm pretty much on my own deciding when and if I need to investigate this. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

op: he says mama and dada, maybe some form of "banana" but not sure. He's always "talking" though, and will have a back and forth "conversation" for hours. He always joins in when other people are talking - he just speaks some other language. [ Reply | More ]

It's unlikely that he'd even qualify for services IMO, esp. if he has no other delays and his receptive language is good/age appropriate. [ Reply | More ]

Is your child SN? If not, then you're an idiot. He'd get there by 2.2 with or without the therapy. [ Reply | More ]

this is so unnecessary. her chid has been helped by speech therapy, so you call her an idiot? my 17 db cannot walk - she's gets a lot of therapy. without therapy, perhaps she would have walked at 3, with therapy, maybe she will walk at 2. Am I an idiot too? She just started speech therapy, and I can see that it is helping - the therapists is trying a lot of techniques that I have not tried and after just one session I saw some change. So that makes me an idiot too? [ Reply | More ]

These posters are just uninformed. It's really unfortunate because their scorn often convinces people not to seek help, and I'll never really understand the attitude, but it's not worth replying to them. And it's another sign that these kinds of questions should be posted to the SN board only. Involving any other board is a bad idea. [ Reply | More ]

I guess - but this poster actually seems like a SN mom, that's what I don't get it. The same person would call the same poster and idiot if she hadn't gotten services for her son [ Reply | More ]

No SN mom I know would say "then you're an idiot" and say that a child would get there with or without the therapy. [ Reply | More ]

As long as he's making the same sound for the same object, it's considered "talking", per my pediatrician. Should be putting 2 words together at 2 years old, also. [ Reply | More ]

My ds was the same at 18 mos. By age 2 when he still had very few words, we had him evaluated and he began speech therapy. [ Reply | More ]

Not at all. Ped wasn't worried since receptive language is far more important than speech. [ Reply | More ]
