Agree or disagree: In public school, teachers believe they work for the Dept of Ed. In private, they behave like they work for you. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

lol, my dc's teacher does not in any way shape or form behave as if she works for me. It is HER classroom. She is all for teamwork, but she's the boss. [ Reply | More ]

only people with a child in each would be able to make a comparision. This is a very subjective question. [ Reply | More ]

No. And why would you want a teacher who thinks that they work for you? [ Reply | More ]

OR (can't reply above): You forgot the fourth - ridiculous. All of those things can be done without a teacher feeling like your employee. [ Reply | More ]

They do work for the DOE, however, DOE is management and they are (mostly) union. Most I know believe they are professionals who get paid to teach children. I don't like it when teachers behave as if they work for the parents. A lot of parents are nutty and/or needy. Teacher is responsible for ALL the kids in class, not for hand-holding individual parents. [ Reply | More ]

ITA with you about the nutty parents. There's 1 mom in preschool class who is incredibly demanding and frankly, unreasonable in her expectations of the school. After a while, I just tune her out b/c there is no way anyone could ever satisfy her. [ Reply | More ]

Private school parents are buying as consumers their child's education - and if only it were that easy. Just ask college admission people. Talent and genious is passed out evenly through all sectors, thank g-d. Kids in public school can SEE that. Public education is the foundation of our democracy because kids learn the democratic process because they are LIVING it. If their Mom comes in to talk to a teacher or the office, and some person that you might not normally associate with is line ahead, well you get in line. No one has more "value" than anyone else. There are no big donors. When they are in middle school and learn their civics, government, and American history, "we hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal" they can get it. I know it sounds corny, but that is what public education does for the character of a child in the first years. I'm lucky to live in a good ps district but even here parents line up to pay for private. [ Reply | More ]

also, parents and kids who think the teacher works for them are enormous nightmares for teachers. my mom is a professor and the sheer number of parents who thikn they have a "right"to certain grade for their child because they are paying for it is amazing. [ Reply | More ]

We all just want our kids to get into a good college though, and private schools seem to be pretty good at that. [ Reply | More ]

I think this sort of thinking--private school teachers are the parent's employees--is the sort of thinking private schools and their teachers hate. [ Reply | More ]

ITTA. The main difference is the entitled snobbish attitude of parents like OP. Fortunately havent run into people like OP at our public school OR our private. [ Reply | More ]

Private school teachers are NOT employees of the parents. They work with the school for the benefit of the children. [ Reply | More ]

More true for principals than for teachers who I believe are focused on the kids, usually. [ Reply | More ]
