how does the mother of an adult behave? why are MILs of men supposed to visit only once a month for a few hours? MILs of DDs don't only talk to their adult DD briefly once a month [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Please work this out with a therapist. These ideas of how to interact with your child 20 years from now will surely shape your relationship now. So fix it before it's a problem. [ Reply | More ]

how often do you talk to you mom? why should it be different for a man vs. a woman with their mothers? [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't have to be any different. I speak to my mother once a week on average. I think women who have issues with MILs get angry about the MIL calling THEM when their sons don't return calls, etc. [ Reply | More ]

ita. i speak to my parents about once a wk or maybe less. they do not expect to talk to dh. do not ask for me to put him on the phone. mil, on the other hand, gets very hurt if i don't want to chat with her and be her buddy on a regular basis. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, my friend has a MIL that expects her to "handle" everything. Doesn't even call her son, calls my friend. Things like taking her to the doctor even though she is perfectly healthy, ordering things online for her because she refuses to use the computer they bought for her, shows up with packed bags unannounced for a week-long visit. That kind of thing. She's only in her early 60s, is married and FIL still works. I think she just has no life and wants my friend to provide one for her. [ Reply | More ]

np: IMO its the same wheter its your son or your daughter, with a few specific exceptions (childbirth, for one). every parent adn child can define their adult relationship differently. [ Reply | More ]

because your kid is only a baby and you are already putting all of these weird and twisted expectations on him. if you foster a loving (not smothering) relationship with your son that will continue into adulthood. [ Reply | More ]

how? they should respect that their dc isn't a small dc anymore. They need to have bounderies for a son or dd. They need to give their d-IL or S-IL respect and know when to give their 2 cents [ Reply | More ]

You have some odd ideas. My DH talks to his mom once a week, they emailmore frequently. There are no hard rules for how a man's mother is supposed to behavior. stop creating problems for yourself. [ Reply | More ]

My grandma who had 6ds and 1 dd, says that a mother of sons raises them to be good husbands not mamas boys. She has a great relationship with all 7 children, and not one daughter in law resents her. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. she is an amazing woman. Not only a great mother but she had quite the love affair with my gramps. They were so in love even after 50 years of marriage. [ Reply | More ]
