I posted earlier that i thought gifted programs weren't good for kids. It's not personal. I've taught in all sorts of programs. From inner city to middle level to gifted. It sets up a hierarchy that prizes certain achievements and doesn't allow the kids at any level to express and achieve to their potential. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you know, you could say this about any school environment. by its very nature, schools prize certain achievements over others, and kids rarely have opportunities to express themselves beyond the school curriculum no matter what program they're in. [ Reply | More ]

i tend to think the US system (not commenting on other countries bc i don't know them to the same degree) is not one that works well. we ask younger children to sit for large portions of the day instead of oging out and running around, explroing. we ask them to take tests to determine what they've learned. and they don't teach how to think. i've also taught university, and it's a huge problem there as well. curious your thoughts on homeschooling? the more I consider the K classroom for my fidgety, distractable ds, the more I am tempted. [ Reply | More ]

i have considered it. but i'm not sure i have the patience or organization for it. i liek the idea of banding with a few other moms and oding it together. also, i know many people say the social aspect of homeschooled kids isn't an issue, but to me it is. again, the idea of working with some othe rmoms seems very appealing. my ideal would be three homeschooling hours w/ my ds in the morning, then send him to a school environment for recess, gym, art, etc...sigh. can't imagine any school allowing this. [ Reply | More ]

if we had stayed in nyc, i would have talked to friends of mine and worked out a school of our own. something smaller that could include programs at any of hte hundreds of organizations in the city. (btw, i'm not sure there's so much art, recess or gym at schools anymore). so much better to go to the Met, then draw in central park afterwards and run around. [ Reply | More ]

accomplishment tends to be measured by the same standard as gifted. so you teach gifted kids what they're supposed to want and many of them get it. but there are so many things that are overlooked bc it doesnt' fall within the range of what is "supposed to be." [ Reply | More ]

I'm talking about creative fields. And unless you're talking about home porn or making meth, I don't see why you "can't get into this"! [ Reply | More ]

see what i said above. even the creative fields can be relatively limited and limiting in many areas. there are so many things that are cutting edge that aren't accepted. and so many potential life experiences that seem frightening and "out there" so people tend to think of them as unacceptable. but they are unbelievable ways of learning about life and the world. and teach you to learn, think and take care of yourself. Do you really think that it's only gifted schools which would limit a dc in these "cutting edge" experiences? I would think it's more about family, about culture - don't you? [ Reply | More ]

it's most certainly both. but a child who doesn't fit into the school system. feels s/he doesnt belong is more likely to try something so different. [ Reply | More ]

OP here.. i'm aslo having troubel replying.. i only say ivy graduated bc i think of it as the college equivalent of gifted programs. and after spending all that money on school, i think people would have a very hard time thinking their child would then not "use" the degree s/he earned. i think most 21 yos woudl have a hard time going against what his/her parents and schools expects of him/her. And sorry for answering your above question re jewelry making & traveling here but UB is wonky & I can't reply under your post but - sure, that's fine as long as dc is supporting herself. Why wouldn't it be? And why do you write Ivy graduated? I just said that dc goes to a gifted school. [ Reply | More ]
