My friend's baby is turning one in a couple of weeks. He is mentally disabled, and this year has been a difficult one for the family. I'm not sure what I should buy the baby for his birthday (they're not having a party for him, but I want to get him something). Clothing? I'm afraid of buying a toy he won't be able to use and hurting their feeling. Any other special ideas? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Clothing is good. Can't kids of any mental ability play with wood blocks? Those are good too [ Reply | More ]

My niece (I posted below) is adorable but she can not play with blocks. She is not interested in figuring things out, stacking, etc. Does your friends' baby enjoy toys? Music? [ Reply | More ]

how about something that covers a wide range of abilities - like nice wooden blocks or a musical shaker toy - like egg maraca thing. [ Reply | More ]

op: Unfortunately not. He can't quite sit on his own yet, so walking seems far off. [ Reply | More ]

so do we. her friend's kid has motor-control issues and other SNs, so something that requires a focused level of concentration and some hand agility is exactly what she is not looking for (as she posted) [ Reply | More ]

I guess I found that they were great even when DC were babies - they would just hold one in a hand at first. Later, they require less skill than regular blocks. [ Reply | More ]

she doesn't want something he can't master yet, that will potentially make the parents feel bad. she doesn't want a building toy the kid can just rub he pieces of for now. (not that people don't buy with an eye to that all the time -- just that it's not appropriate in this situation). and if you have a typically-developing kid, it's hard to really grasp how difficult something as small as sticking those pieces together really is [ Reply | More ]

Well, my child is SN. He has dyspraxia. The bristle blocks are very common in OT. [ Reply | More ]

No, definitely not the same. But I still say a good choice. Not knowing the specifics of this child, I guess maybe I think that OP shouldn't worry so much about offending or upsetting the parents. (How's your DS doing? My DS is almost 7, his speech is much better, fine motor skills still a mess.) [ Reply | More ]

(1) cute bathing suit/rash guard, floating toy for pool (that he can sit with his legs through the holes-- there's a spin around baby float on onestepahead.com that looks good. They have a babycarrier so you friend could wear her baby in the swimming pool if that would make her more comfortable (2) A wagon big enough for the kid to ride in stuffed with a bunch of small toys... when he can sit up he might like to ride in it (3) Step2 has Naturally Playful Sandbox (small sandbox with a cover) which might be good if they have a yard (4) I assume he has the LeapFrod Learning Table-- if he doesn't get one--even if he's on his tummy, he can push the buttons... then when he can sit up and stand up it's a toy that just gets better. My 2.5 started playing with this at 8 months and still loves it. [ Reply | More ]

and by the way, I think it's OK to acknowledge that some of what you're getting might be "looking ahead," but you know he's going to "get there" at his own pace. Hopefully they'll throw him a bash for his second birthday. Also, maybe post this on the Special Needs Board for more suggestions. [ Reply | More ]

My niece is a SN child and did not sit up until she was a year. She actually does not like any toys. I think this poster had some wonderful ideas (less the leap frog stander - that could depress them) but you should have a feel for the child or go with the clothes idea. My niece loves to float in the pool in a ring, loves MUSIC, but doesn't watch videos or play with any toys at all. Toys R Us has special needs toys, but each kid with delays is SO different.
