Here's a btdt that for you: I went to a "middle school" where we were all bunched in from several elementaries and left to fend for ourselves. I then went into a high school that was part of a K-12 school. I basically learned that the kids who had been at the school all their lives seemed to have had a much harder, more miserable middle school experience than I did; cliques intensified, etc. Also, the kids who had been at the school since kindy had a much harder time adjusting to college life. I have vowed never to consider a K-12 for my kids; kids really need to be exposed to different settings and people. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Are you looking at K-8 schools? There are very few private schools that don't include at least middle school and, speaking as the parent of a child in upper school at a K-8 school, I'm glad my dc is not experiencing puberty and a new school at the same time. I agree with you that it can be good for kids to experience change: my child will have that in 9th grade. You had the advantage that everyone in your middle school was new. [ Reply | More ]

That's interesting. I have that from many K-12 school parents about middle school being so weak. I think the middle school years are so hard on kids and its nice to have a new group of kids to distract or explore with. We are at a K-6 private and look forward to choosing a new school when the time comes. [ Reply | More ]

why not consider the best possble for school for dc for grades k-5 or k-8 and then make a change. no need to stay where you start. [ Reply | More ]

It's very hard to apply out from an ongoing school. They will not help you and can actually work against you in terms of school reports. [ Reply | More ]

this is one of the reasons we chose public. did not like our private options, and felt we would not be happy there long term. felt we'd rather take our chances applying form a good public for MS [ Reply | More ]
