i send my dd to a very diverse public school - mainly low income, projects nearby. there are some troubled kids of course (a K classmate recently threatened to kill the teacher) but the teachers seem to have a handle on the discipline side of things. i can afford private but i just don't like the thought of sending her to some protected enclave with kids who are essentially just like her. am i the only one who sees value in kids experiencing "real" diversity instead of a sanitized private-school version? i don't see the income/racial differences as a negative. i've gotten to know the kids through helping out in the class and although some of them are tough they are essentially good kids. i feel judged sometimes for my decision to send her there (most friends do private). If you value diversity so greatly for your daughter why are all YOUR friend upper middle class? [ Reply | More ]

np: how do you know OPs friends are all upper middle class? She may have made friends with some of the moms who live in the projects [ Reply | More ]

I know because she wrote that her friends children go to private - an upper middle class priviledge for the most part. [ Reply | More ]

I'm your opposite. We are hispanic, live in a very ethnic area and send my dcs to private school. My kids are there with dc who are like them and very different. Some minorities, some poor, many rich. Doens't bother me. I went to a NYC public for HS and it was a joke. DH and I both said we wouldn't waste our dc time or education in our local zone public which is failing. [ Reply | More ]

i think it is great as long as dd is getting a good education. that the teachers can teach and not just discipline. i would also worry about dd safety with some of the older kids at school if they are tough as you said. [ Reply | More ]

of course they are not getting the same quality education from an academic perspective. OP is sacrificing that on behalf of political correctness. [ Reply | More ]

i don't think she is just being politically correct - i agree that there is more to learn in school than just academics. frankly, learning that there are different types of people in the world and knowing how to get along with them will probably be more important than ap calc or the history of russian lit in the 1800s. we are making the exact same decision. (What school, by the way?) I think being exposed in a real way to all kinds and types of people is great for dcs and for us. There is absolutely NOTHING that a kid can learn in private school that is as important in the longterm as learning to live with all types of people. So a private school kid might learn division in 3rd grade and mine will learn it in 4th grade. Who really cares? [ Reply | More ]

a kid threatened to kill a teacher? the teachers don't have a handle on discipline? not in a million years would i subject my kids to that if i could afford better for them. you're insane. and, i agree with a previous poster, you could choose to widen your social circle so that your kids could experience 'diversity," as you so quaintly put it.
