2.5 yo DD spent the night at MIL's and I found out she had soda and gum - first time ever for each, and I would definitely not offer these items to her. WWYD - say something to MIL or leave it be and assume it will happen only rarely, if ever, again? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

try to let it go... that's what grandparents are for, to corrupt your kids without consequence... it's their prize for putting up with their own kids' crap for their whole lives [ Reply | More ]

if anything, mention it to MIL very light heartedly and say that you prefer they are treats. not too often. [ Reply | More ]

gum and soda for a 2.5 yo? Come on. JUjst not appropirate. My mom gives a few Hershey Kisses or some M&M's or ice cream with extra chocolate syrup on it. And not for a 2 yo without asking. [ Reply | More ]

np i don't muind gum so much. but at that age, need to be watched. i have more a problem with soda. would only let dd have it if she brushes her teeth after. that's actually something i'd mention. [ Reply | More ]

are you really serious? I think it is insane to be a nag over a stick of gum and a glass of soda. [ Reply | More ]

not sure if you're talking to me or the pp... it's one thing to mention it. another to nag. i'd mention it. MIL might not know OP has a prob with it and perhaps woudln't do it. bc there ar eplenty of other treats she can give too. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I wasn't suggesting nagging and I even gave the OP a sensible way to present her reason for not allowing it. And there are nice treats for a 2 yo that an grandmom can give...pudding, ice cream, chocolate milk, home made cookies or pie....just no need for those particular items at 2.5 [ Reply | More ]

OP: no, I didn't - guess I'll say something if it comes up. I don't want to rob her of being a grandma, but that stuff is gross for toddlers, IMHO [ Reply | More ]

or: well you are being a bit dramatic...but soda and gum have no business in a 2yr old stomach. The gum is a choking hazard [ Reply | More ]

Is gum a choking hazard? Otherwise, just let it go. Make sure DD understand that these "treats" are only found at Grandma's house, because at home we eat healthy, nutritious foods. [ Reply | More ]

My DC are older, so I don't remember. If it's a choking hazard, you gotta tell Grandma no. Otherwise, spoiling is her privilege. [ Reply | More ]

I agree- and my 3.5 yo understands that chocolate milk only happens at grandma's house. Never asks for it at home [ Reply | More ]

I think grandmothers are allowed to spoil a little and give treats that you might not at home, but the gum would worry me as a choking issue still at that age. I would say something to her. [ Reply | More ]

If this is getting you so riled up I think you need to prepare yourself for the next 15 years. Parenthood means giving up a lot of control. [ Reply | More ]

that's bullshit. Other ppl don't have the right to feed your dc crap if this isn't what you allow. PPL need to respect what parents allow and don't allow [ Reply | More ]

unfortunatley, this isn't really true. you only have so much control over what your children do or don't do. and quite frankly, i'd rather dd be with someone i trust, who will keep her safe and love her than worry over a stick of gum. as with everything, you have to pick your battles. what is so bad about soda once in a while? i think teaching children certain foods are off limits only increases the children's desire for the foods. i allow my daughter to have a bit of everything - her choices in the long run seem to be about 80-85% nutritious foods and the balance more "fun" foods.
