Sigh, my (just turned) 6 yo has decided that she shoudl make Junie B Jones the first chapter book she reads all by herself. I told her it was abook that kids read on there own...not one for Mommies to read. LOL, I think I deserve this! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP: You know what is funny...she corrects the grammar as she reads it out loud to me!!!!! (ie best for bestest and really good for real good, for example). DD1 didn't discover JBJ until middle of 1st grade and she thought it was "boring" by then. [ Reply | More ]

my 1st-grade daughter just did that for me throughout our whole reading of "The Secret Garden" when I was trying to read the Yorkshire to her. I finally had to switch the words to "proper English" because she was driving me nuts! [ Reply | More ]

np. How funny - we just finished reading The Secret Garden, and the Yorkshire dialect was dd's favorite aspect of the story. She wanted to do all the dialog where it was spoken. It was hilarious. [ Reply | More ]

OP: dds love when I do the funny voices and vocabulary shenanigans of the BFG. It is one of my favorite read-alouds. I've probably done it atleast 3 ties now. [ Reply | More ]

The BFG may be the best read-aloud book, ever. DC, DH and I all snuggle up on the bed and read it together and try not to pee our pants from all the laughing. [ Reply | More ]

wow I am embarrassed--I just looked it up on Amazon. I am mostly reliving my own childhood by reading aloud books I loved as a child. I am too old for this one (although read lots of other Dahl as a kid). I will need to go get it. [ Reply | More ]

my first grade daughter is all about "following the rules" to a fault--and that definitely includes corrected grammar. I posted on another thread that based on her current personality she would likely be a whistle blower or narc someday (which is interesting because her brother will be a con man) [ Reply | More ]

Yes and I loved the play too but to have to read it out loud would be miserable. They are books which inspire parents to exhort their kids to read independently. [ Reply | More ]

Reading in their head is another big one! But I do miss the days of dd reading out loud all the time. Try to keep her reading aloud a little to you or a stuffed animal every day, if you can. It's a useful skill, and it regresses a lot for many dc once they learn to read silently to themselves. [ Reply | More ]

My dc loves Junie B...but not me? I'm afraid some of the incorrect use of grammar in the book will rub off on her. But, my dc thinks it's funny. She was just reading it to me last night... [ Reply | More ]

op......see what I mean...lol....my policy on certain books is that any reading is better than none (ie graphic novels, etc), btu I'm not going to be the one who buys them and I'm not going to read them. But if they are not "inappropriate" (and Iknow we all have different ideas as to what that means..mine tends more toward social and sexual situations), the book is fine. [ Reply | More ]
