Any one else concerned about widespread famine in Ethiopia this year? The early rains never materialized so the first crop was wasted. Severe food shortages for 6 months are anticipated. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it isn't just isolated to ethiopia. huge increase in food prices is causing problems in most of the world-I think this is going to make bad situations much worse [ Reply | More ]

OP: Ifind it so interesting though, when Americans complain about food prices. If you do some research, our relative food costs have been at an all time low. We pay for crap and we get it. And then there was the article baou the farmers who wanted to grow a dverse (organic) food crop on some unused (former) wheat acres and the governtment slapped them with a huge, huge fine. And finally, I was struck by the famer who had to plow under 30 yo cherry trees that grew sweet cherries in favor of planting tart, hardy cherries to be used in processed food. Govt regs have discourage migrant farmers form working in the US. [ Reply | More ]

the fact that the gov't is raiding many businesses/farms which rely on imgrant labor to look for illegal immigrants is a huge problem. you hit the nail on the head-we are so concerned about paying cheap costs, so we shop at wal mart, ignoring the fact that they squeeze out their vendors and treat their employees like crap. part of it may have to do with the decrease in influence of labor unions [ Reply | More ]

But the costs for healthy foods and produce is very high. It's deceptive that they average the cost of Twinkies in with milk. [ Reply | More ]

I was just reading an article with prices (adjusted for inflation) for milk. Milk has only been more expensive during the 70s gas crisis and during WWII (according to this chart). [ Reply | More ]

they didn't have twinkies to average in the 40s....the truth is we have very high expectation for low food costs in the US. [ Reply | More ]
