so tired of NYC. We would love to move to Hawaii and live by the water. I'm in finance and my dh is a PT. We have one dd. Do you think we'll get by in Hawaii? We've only been there once & loved it. I'm willing to work in hotel. What do you think? I've lived in NYC all my life & am so tired of it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Once you get there you might find it boring. [ Reply | More ]

unless you get into the private school there (and they mostly take native hawaiians), schools are complete crap. plus, cost of living is crazy [ Reply | More ]

True - have to get into Punaho (?) (Obama's alma mater), or you're sort of screwed, school-wise [ Reply | More ]

yeah, why not try moving to the East or West Coast first. Even Florida...I hear you can get a deal of real estate! [ Reply | More ]

Cost of EVERYTHING is high in Hawaii, may be more than NYC. I agree Hawaii is nice, but unless you are a surfer family or something, the place would be best for visiting, not living. [ Reply | More ]

np: Much higher than NYC for food, gas, amenities. And getting healthcare out there is really weird - everyone I know flies back to mainland for anything serious. [ Reply | More ]

I have some friends who moved to Hawaii. Both attorneys, very happy wit their choices. But it is VERY hard to be so far from their family in NY. [ Reply | More ]

ah... wouldn't everyone? Go figure it out and tell the rest of us how to do it. If we knew we wouldn't be here. [ Reply | More ]

Just be aware that everyone there works multiple jobs, which is necessary because salaries don't match the cost of living. My friend is a tech professional, adjunct professor and runs a consulting company. For the most part, the price of things are comparable to NYC, but salaries are about 40 percent lower. So while you are willing to work in a hotel, you would have to have other sources of income. [ Reply | More ]

friend did this - they lasted a year. everything on the island must be imported, so the prices are often worse than nyc. and, as another poster explained, the salaries aren't commensurate. check out charleston, sc or north carolina (if you want hawaii, you won't be happy with florida). Or you could try california or portland, oregon on the west coast. [ Reply | More ]

I'm with you about being tired of NYC. Seriously...I am so over it. It was fun being single, fun as married couple, but with db, i hate it. I don't even want to go outside. [ Reply | More ]
