Call this a brag or whatever, but I feel like now we're tied down to NYC indefinitely bec our dc got into our FC school which we love. I used to fantasize about cashing out of NYC coop and buying a whole house w/ 100% cash and have money left over by the water somewhere... but that fantasy is dead. Bec of dc's school. There are good schools all over the country. You do not HAVE to be bound to one school. It is your choice. [ Reply | More ]

no offense, but that's a little silly. you can buy a beautiful house in a good public school system and your dc will be just fine. That's what we did and we couldn't be happier, honestly. [ Reply | More ]

Dh and I went through HELL (called NYC private kindergarten admissions) and got an acceptance from this impossible school, and we've got to stick it out at least for a while.... Maybe that's why these schools make you jump through hoops, to make you more invested in them.. [ Reply | More ]

we all went through it. we know. you cna still move when or if you like, no biggy. There are good schools (and not so good schools) every where. Because ds was admitted to your fc, is *not* a reason to not pursue a valid fantasy. [ Reply | More ]

We are in the same position. And we don't have nearly enough space, but we feel that school is such a huge part of dcs' lives that it becomes the biggest priority. [ Reply | More ]

Oh for heaven's sake, you really need to get a sense of perspective. If this is what you are spending time worrying about, you are in the top 99.999% of the world's population in terms of privilege. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Brearley and I think it's 1000% percent worth it for some of these schools. Which school? Just curious. Went through this last year for our son (St. Bernards) and I don't have thesame feeling. [ Reply | More ]

for k through 4 th grade, I think allof the privates are on track with each other. High School, maybe not, but there are very, very few publics (even the UB Holy Grail of the "excellent suburban public" that send 100% of their grads to college and provide a rigourous college prep curriculum. All of the selective NYC public high schools and all of the UB "excellent suburban public" HS provide a rigorous college prep curriculum. I don't know why it would matter whether 100% went to college or whether 80% do. [ Reply | More ]

I'm surprised that you decided to send dc to St B - isn't that really traditional? Kinda diff from B. [ Reply | More ]

Our fantasy is to go overseas for a couple of years and then come back - but to think about pulling dc out of school and then reapplying - UGH [ Reply | More ]

If you handle this well, communicate with your school, you will not need to re-apply. [ Reply | More ]

every school is different. some are nastier than others, some see value in family travel. if you have a valid opportunity, you should explore it. [ Reply | More ]

np-I haven't heard of any school "holding" a spot for a couple of years...however, I know people who've done this for 1 yr and the schools have held the spot. Besides, if you go for a couple of years, the school you want to come back to might be a different one. [ Reply | More ]

You can hold your spot. Dalton lets you do it... but you have to pay the full tuition while you're gone. hmmm, so maybe that's not really "holding your spot" ?!?!? [ Reply | More ]

We feel that way about our Hunter child. We don't feel like we could find a comparable suburban elementary school (although some suburban high schools might be more comparable to the high school) [ Reply | More ]

We didn't want to leave the city either, but if ds hadn't gotten into one of our top 3, we would've cashed out, and bought a bigger place with a good neighborhood school outside the city. Now, we'll stay in our 2 br at least another 5 yrs. [ Reply | More ]

i know how you feel. but here is the rub. i feel sucker punched. we're two years in and now i feel stuck like this a life i got sucked up in and isn't really who i feel we are. For the most part i don't like the crowd. it is so over privileged competitive and often laughable for their materialism. It's entirely boring but I'm worried about the effect it will take on the children to have to readjust to another school. [ Reply | More ]
