Anyone who is leaving exclusively because of schools, in my book, has other issues with New York. Might as well instead say "who is leaving because the city is too expensive?" [ Reply | More ]

so you would subject your kids to mediocre public schooling just because you like other things about the city (assuming private didn't work out and you can afford it)? For us, schools are most important, full stop. But, to each his own. [ Reply | More ]

Did it occur to you the 2 are linked? If you can afford private school (and get in!) the public situation is probably not killing you. [ Reply | More ]

we can afford it but didn't get in. all 99s. the public school situation *is* killing us. It feels abusive. We love NY, but it doesn't love us back. [ Reply | More ]

I would leave in a second, but not my husband -- he doesn't care about our kid's futures enough "to rot in a suburb." [ Reply | More ]

i think his priorities are screwed up. maybe they'll change if he gets a closer look at what public schooling is like her. otherwise, good luck with privates. [ Reply | More ]

np: We just moved to the burbs, but I think you are overstating the "kids' futures" part. Plenty of people graduate from middling schools in NYC and go on to have great lives. [ Reply | More ]

The suburbs aren't going anywhere, you can ALWAYS move there. There will be other opportunities for private school after K no matter what anyone says. Public schools will continue to improve. New private schools will open. Etc. [ Reply | More ]
