Because of the cost of daycare, paying off student loans and gas prices, I should be in the middle class but I'm not. I'm embarrassed because I have an academic job and there's an expectation that I have "enough" money but we are barely breaking even. It's making me very depressed. Just, fyi for those who will ask - DH earns 3k less than me and is not in a high earning industry. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

stay at home, limit driving. minimal phone plans. get rid of tv, internet. eat cheap meals, like chili, tacos, tuna. dry your clothes on a line. set a strict food budget, you can make it work. [ Reply | More ]

stop getting highlights, eliminate mani/pedi & do it yourself, cook more rather than go out (except for date nights), shop less, shop at sales or discount stores... [ Reply | More ]

You don't have to be 'embarrassed' for being who you are. Goodness isn't an equation- like if you have x, you are y. Just enjoy your life and be a good mom [ Reply | More ]

I am in the same boat. I am a professor and dh is at a non-profit. So, I can relate, but was there some specific advice you were looking for? [ Reply | More ]

np- ita, both dh & I work at nonprofits, but we know lots of people who are well educated & don't make a lot. I've never felt the need to 'pretend to be wealthy.' We chose our fields & jobs, so I feel like if I wanted to make more, I could do something else. [ Reply | More ]

I guess how to deal with the emotional sides of things. We also don't own a house, yet and just moved to a new area that I was hoping was less materialistic than our last, but found it's not. Also, DH values money a lot more than I do, even though he mismanages it. He'll ask me or tell me-- is it to keep up with the Joneses? ... He'll be chiding me but he's really the one who worries about that type of stuff. [ Reply | More ]
