I'm curious about the expression "get over yourself," which seems patronizing and a put-down. Would you use it with a friend who's talking about a problem? If so, would you use it even when you're feeling kindly toward the friend, or only when annoyed? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that expression is patronizing and bitchy. I would never use it when I'm trying to comfort anyone. Just mean to do. [ Reply | More ]

OP: no, I've just seen it a lot here and wondered about the UBers who use it. It always seems destructive but I wasn't sure that I was reading it right. [ Reply | More ]

I wanted to reply under your last post but it's kicking me off so I'm posting as a NP but I'm not. You aren't reading it wrong..ppl on UB are mean, sarcastic and feel the need to be nasty in order to make their miserable lives seem better. [ Reply | More ]

Gotcha. (UB's weird right now -- keeps sending me to login as well. I think it needs to get over itself.;)) [ Reply | More ]

OP: This leads to my next question: do the posters who say this on UB also say it to their own friends? is it a group thing, so it doesn't feel particularly painful, just a way of kidding around with each other? [ Reply | More ]

I have said it to my best friend (and dh) in a kidding way, when they are being overly dramatic or silly. the context is always clear. Like DH saying "I picked up my 3 day old underwear from the floor, arent you lucky to have a man like me?" That's a get over yourself moment. [ Reply | More ]
