13-y-o DS is very bright, gets excellent grades in advanced classes, plays piano, but spends every spare minute on a screen of some kind (computer, Wii, tv, DS, etc.) He is lucky b/c he can get by with minimal practice on piano, same with school, and is very thin so no one (but me ) comments that he doesn't exercise much. But every spare minute at home is in front of a screen. I feel torn b/c it doesn't seem right to spend so much time gaming (with friends and alone), but at the same time, he's doing everything else he's supposed to, so I have little demonstrable reason to say it's wrong. Any ideas? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

13 is a tough age and this is how he's dealing with it. I would let him be. He's clearly more than fine. [ Reply | More ]

one thing that comes to mind is that weight isn't nec. the primary reason to get exercise and fresh air. also i wouldn't make it about right or wrong. have you chatted with him openly about his choices to be on a screen all the time? what does he say? [ Reply | More ]

Totally agree re: weight but unfortunately it's the sort of thing peds and others note--i.e., if the kid is heavy, they're more likely to say, 'lay off the games' than if the kid doesn't stand out in that way. As for his response, it's 'what else do you want me to do?' but not in a kind, cooperative way--more in an outraged, leave-me-alone way. Do other kids do this with all their time? [ Reply | More ]

NP: Sounds like he's lonely and doesn't have friends to hang out with (from his response). [ Reply | More ]

He has friends. If it's up to him, they come over and game. Luckily, the friends pull him outside (yesterday they made him go to the pool), but I worry that they'll get tired of the game obsession and he will end up lonely. [ Reply | More ]
