We're lucky that ds got into two middle schools (public). We're choosing the smaller less prestigious school because we feel it will be a better fit. My mom is being very critical about this choice, and is making me second guess my choice. Please reinforce my belief that prestige does not make the school. TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm not going to say because I don't need to hear anything negative right now. [ Reply | More ]

You are right! You called it based on your intimate knowledge of your son. Grandma cares, but she's not the decision-maker here. Tell Grandma you are happy with your decision and ready to close the subject. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks - I know you're right but it's hard to shut out her voice in my head. [ Reply | More ]

Tell her there is no "best" school, there's only the best school for your dc. Now I'm curious - what schools? [ Reply | More ]

Its middle school. It won't end up on his resume. Go with what you think is right for your child. Who cares about the status. His Grandma will have to find something else to brag about [ Reply | More ]

Send your dc to the school that's the best fit for him. Doing well and being happy in middle school will put him in the best position to apply for HS. [ Reply | More ]

Your kid's happiness in middle school is all that matters. It is such a rough age. Having a bad experience will only set him up to be unhappy in middle school and perhaps beyond. Let your mom's voice go b/c you'll be hearing it from others, too--just keep telling yourself that it's a long road ahead and being in the prestigious place now doesn't guarantee anything if it's not right for the kid. He's lucky he has you. [ Reply | More ]

We're in a similar position. dd got into two excellent elementaries (public). Someone at the DOE told me...worry about your child, not what everyone else needs/thinks/says. [ Reply | More ]
