Thoughts on kids playing with water balloons at playgrounds? I was at Hudson River Playground (the one at 12th St and the river) this weekend and saw kids filling up and dropping water ballons. Little pieces of latex were all over the place. Saw one awesome mom make a kid (not even her own) remove a piece of latex from her mouth. I started picking up the stray pieces of latex and throwing them in the trash. I was tempted to say something to the grownups of some of the kids who were playing with the water balloons (as in, if your kids are going to play with these, could you please make sure all the pieces are thrown away?), but I was worried about overstepping my boundaries and causing a scene. I was freaked out because the playground was so crowded and many kids could have put a piece of latex in their mouths without their grownups noticing. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Look, kids play with water balloons in the summer. I do try to pick up pieces that fall on the ground, but you can't stop kids from playing with them. Get used to it [ Reply | More ]

i am basically a non-confrontational person, however, when i see something detrimental to my children (or any child for that matter), i somehow find my voice. at john jay playground the toddler play area is gated. i kept watching the idiot parents walk out the gates and not shut them behind them. any child could have run right out. i ended up shouting at the inconsiderate parents to shut the gates. I make my kids pick up the pieces if they ever do a few water balloons at the park (or at our weekend house, for that matter). [ Reply | More ]

OP is right. The balloons are a hazard to children who put the pieces in their mouths, but it is not a battle you can win. There are way too many children playing with water balloons, and there is no way you can pick up all those tiny pieces. You just have to watch your baby like a hawk. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. We live on the UES and for some reason, the playground at Rupart Park is always full of kids playing with water ballons, so we just don't go to the particular playground. [ Reply | More ]

Not a problem for me. I watch my dc at the park. There are many things that can be found that dc can pick up and choke on. [ Reply | More ]
