How worried would you be in my situation? A man I just got engaged to after a year of dating has a history as a heavy drinker and drug user- he is a musician. When we first met he had been sober for three years and told me he would "never drink a drop of alcohol again"- his sobriety was a major aspect of his presentation. He told me he got "hotheaded" and "emotionally" abusive" when he drank and that he made bad decisions about sexuality- ie cheating on girlfriends and casual sex with near-strangers. It was of passionate importance to him never to drink again. Last night, at just about the only party he's been to without me since we got together, he drank a "few sips" of tequila- he told me when he got home. This has really freaked me out mainly because it is so odd, so out of character for him, so in violation of his stated principles. I used to drink a bit socially but have stopped since we started dating in solidarity with him. my friends have warmed me that his "wild past" might resurface. what do you guys think? what does he do to maintain his sobriety? (Does he do AA? Does he have another support network?) How does he feel about the tequila (remorseful, freaked out, or is he acting like it's no biggie?) [ Reply | More
