I want to SAH. The only reason I won't is that I know how hard it will be to re-enter the workforce. I see how my colleagues look at potential hires who took even a short period off (for any reason) and know that if I ever check out, it will be for good. And I absolutely hate that. Can you get a part-time gig? I think it's really true, by the way, that checking out makes it really hard to get back in. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Not unless I want to make a major career change. My position must be full time and there a very, very few positions in my function/industry that would allow pt work. It's all or nothing. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, OP, but UB won't let me respond to your post below (OR here). I'm in a similar industry (financial services). [ Reply | More ]

I'm trying to get back after just 6 months out (lay-offs) and I'm finding it hard. But the economy is not good now. Maybe otherwise it's not so hard? Either way, I would say don't plan on being out for too long and do things to maintain contacts, keep yourself marketable. No one cares if you were class mom... [ Reply | More ]

OP: I have seen people who apply for positions after taking a year off to care for a sick spouse or an elderly parent be torn apart by hiring managers. The attitude is "either you were in the trenches working, or you don't care about your career and are not worth my time". It is brutal, and has gotten worse, IMO. [ Reply | More ]

It's terrible. I really feel like once you have kids they totally write you off anyway. I"m less driven than I once was but I still want to be taken seriously and this frustrates me. [ Reply | More ]

A is a good friend of mine going through what you are. GL! It is a really tough market. I am so done with my job but wouldn't think of leaving right now. [ Reply | More ]
