looking for beach rental for a week or two in august. we usually have gone to montauk and stayed in motels or w/ friends. like the down-to-earth/relaxed vibe in that area, and wonder what other areas to look into. what is sag harbor like? any other ideas on long island? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

True, Shelter Island is so lovely but for the same drive time w/ no ferry you should check out Cape May, N.J. It's [ Reply | More ]

Exit 0 on the Garden State Pkwy. It's the oldest NorthEast Atlantic resort town with great Victorian style, super family oriented, amazing beaches and dolphins swimming near shore all day long! I've got a place to rent that sleeps [ Reply | More ]

Cape May Village 3 minutes. I'm reducing the price and still have several weeks open in June, July and August. If you're not totally heart-set on L.I., Cape May is a great discovery. [ Reply | More ]

Take the Holland to turnpike.Get off at exit 11 (don't be fooled by earlier chances to get the Garden State) Get on the Garden State Pkwy and stay on until exit 0. It's 3 hrs from the Williamsburg or Bklyn Bridges- and so worth the trip-especially if you've got 2 weeks. [ Reply | More ]

thanks. will look into it. I'm still semi-new to NYC and have never been to NJ (unless you could ikea and newark airport). i do tend to like less-crowded, more rugged beaches like what I've seen in Montauk and the area. i'm from oregon, where you can go to the coast and not see anyone for miles on a beach. : ) [ Reply | More ]

I've got friends whom rent their homes in East Hampton and on Shelter Island for some of July and all of August- just to pay their exorbitant taxes. Both fams are native to L.I. and grew up in those towns. They both rent in Cape May and save money. [ Reply | More ]

shelter island definitely has a different vibe than montauk -- not as relaxed and more $$$ [ Reply | More ]

Montauk has really changes so much in the past few years and in Amagansett you pay dearly for the 'relaxed vibe'. [ Reply | More ]

If you have money to burn and want solitude on the N Fork look in Orient. Otherwise I still vote Cape May. [ Reply | More ]

It's close to nyc (about an hour and a half I think), but it is way more laid back than montauk. [ Reply | More ]
