help! my 8 yo dd is getting fat! we already are a no junk-food, healthy, active family. I think she's inherited her aunt's body type -- morbidly obese. What can I do now to keep dd from getting into the terrible weight/misery cycle??? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

please talk to a ped and find out if she is really fat. and having a mom who harps on your weight is a big part of the weight/misery cycle. start with the sr, and look at what you are feeding her. 8yos don't get fat ont heir own. [ Reply | More ]

Stop freaking out and comparing her to her morbidly obese Aunt. She knows you think this. [ Reply | More ]

morbidly obese isn't a body type. You seem like the problem here--has her ped said she is overweight? [ Reply | More ]

OP: her last ped visit was 6 months ago. I'm not going to make an appt just for this! (she never gets sick) I'm telling you, I can see the difference. I have not talked to her about anything; I want to do something now to help her the way my own mother never helped me! [ Reply | More ]

nnp. What do you mean, "just for this"? If it's enough of an issue to make you freak out and post on UB, where you MUST have known you'd get flamed, then it's worth taking her to the ped. Before you try to make dd lose weight or stop gaining, you need to have the ped verify there's a real problem. [ Reply | More ]

nnnp: you can't tell if an 8 yo looks fat or not. I am the one saying OP should work on portion control. every person I know who is fat and denies snacking eats 3 squares a day...usually heavy full meals like I ate growing up. some people, if not most cannot eat this way. [ Reply | More ]

That's fine, but my point is before she even thinks about working on portion control, she should get an actual medical opinion about her dd's weight. OP sounds like she has too many of her own issues to just start trying to change her dd's eating patterns without professional advice. [ Reply | More ]

not junk food, but likely more calories than she needs for her activity level and growth at this point. I would work on portion control. same thing happened to df's 6 yo. she was feeding her the same size meals as she did when she was a rapidly growing toddler who spent hours at gym class and the playground. the kid started packing on the pounds. portion control is what you need [ Reply | More ]

If you are truly a no junk food, active family then you shouldn't change anything. She is who she is. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. her calorie content is too high or she would not be getting fat. op needs to cut down her portions. [ Reply | More ]

MOST fat kids are juice drinkers. Bad for teeth and no nutritional value you can't get from whole fruit. [ Reply | More ]

OP: We rarely if ever give juice. Maybe a juice box with calcium in lunch, but 90 percent of the time she drinks water. [ Reply | More ]

don't make her life miserable -- parents putting their kids on a diet does not help them lose weight. Check out kateharding.net. And, there is definitely a body type: thin people don't usually eat any less than fat people -- people have different bodies and metabolism. Just make sure she is healthy! [ Reply | More ]

Thank you for posting that link (not op). Reading about the reality of the "obesity epidemic" is great. FInally some stuff I suspected to be true... [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the link. I think her points are very valid. And you are probably right about naturally thin people eating as much. But in my DH's case, eating less and more importantly following South Beach has resulted in him no longer needing meds for Diabetes II. He thought his endocrinologist was full of crap when she said he wouldn't need them if he dropped 25lbs, and she was right. Now, even when he treats himself to a dessert or candy, his blood sugar levels do not spike. It's been amazing. [ Reply | More ]

Ask her regular pediatrician... call with height and weight and birth date, see what ped says. Don't overreact! If ped says test blood for how she's processing food, do so. If ped says relax, relax! [ Reply | More ]
