Looking for feedback on pros/cons of whether to attend Upper LAB or NEST for 6th grade? Particularly interested in posts by NEST MS parents on their childs experience? Currently attend a Dist.2 school, so lots of positive feedback from older siblings who attend UL already. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Did you get acceptances from both Lab and NEST and have to make a choice? Or are you trying to decide which one to apply for next year? They are very different schools. [ Reply | More ]

DS accepted into both schools. Yes, I know they are very different. He comes from a school similar to LAB (lots of collaborative work), but has a personality that seems to fits well with NEST. However, I do have some concerns about NEST re: support provided for the MS students. LAB seems to be more nurturing. [ Reply | More ]

Also,I understand only 30% of NEST middleschoolers go on to NEST HS. Does anyone know what HS NEST students attend? Also, what percentage of LAB students stay on? From what I understand, it is a much higher percentage. Is that correct? [ Reply | More ]

UL here. Lab has historically retained more students for HS. Usually, we only lose students to the specialized HS. Some of the students who got accepted declined the specialized HS placement and opted to stay. Some went to the specialized High's and came back within weeks. However, this fluctuates from year to year. It is in no way even near 30%. It is way much higer. With that said, one thing that a lot of people are not aware of is that Lab is no longer a 6-12 school. It became two schools about 3, 4 years ago. The separation is more apparent this year because DOE caught up with Lab and basically told Lab that they have to operate as two schools. The Principals this year told the parents and students that acceptance into MS does not gurantee a HS seat anymore. See, the Chancellor's Reg. note that a student at a school is guranteed a seat until terminal grade and the MS terminates at 8th grade because Lab is not a 6-12 anymore. I cannot say which one I will pick since I never pay much attention to the NEST MS. [ Reply | More ]

You should read (if you haven't already) Helicopter Mom blog re NEST middle school(www.goodcityliving.com/blog-helicopter-mom). She seems a little nuts, but if there is even a modicum of accuracy in what she is reporting there is no way I would choose to send my dc there for middle school. Sounds hellish. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the feedback to all who've responded so far. Just getting back to my computer tonight to check responses. Does anyone (particularly interested in feedback from NEST parents) know which HS NEST MS students are attending? Since there seems to be such a high percentage of NEST MS'ers that don't go on to the HS, I was wondering why that is & where those students are going? [ Reply | More ]
