How would you handle this? My 6 yo ds has become good friends with one of his classmates - she's the sweetest little 6 1/2 yo little girl and we love having her over but the kid's playdates tend to go way over time-wise which can be hard because my ds needs some down time and today, for instance, he didn't have any because he went from soccer to an unexpected quicky playdate with a friend & neighbor to a planned movie playdate with this little girl. It gets hard because our family starts making plans for dinner, bath and bedtime and this little girl's mom STILL hasn't picked her up! And when I try to call her mom, I tend to get her voice mail. And then like an hour or so later she'll call back - and by the time she comes to pick her dd up, MY ds is cooked, stick a fork in him, OVER DONE. Sorry so long but how would you handle this, in the future? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Don't you just ask her to pick up dd by a certain time? And she doesn't? That's weird. She's taking advantage. I would just be clear that you have plans for TK time, I guess. [ Reply | More ]

OP: well, I think part of it is cultural - they're Latin and just not as hung up about time as we are. The mom will say something like, "so around 5 o'clock, then?, ok - give me a call - I'll be around ..." and then I'll give her a call at 5, get her voice mail and leave her a message saying that my ds is beginning to fade so why doesn't she come pick her dd up now ... and then she'll call back an hour or so later, as her dd is saying she's hungry and wants dinner, and THEN she'll finally come pick her dd up around 6:30 or so. This has happened every time the kids play together at our home. [ Reply | More ]

don't be a doormat. Say no to the 3rd playdate in a day or say, you have to pick her up by 4 - so the playdate is over then. [ Reply | More ]

then I guess I would stop having playdates with the little girl. Explain to her mom why. I still think she's taking advantage, Latin or not. [ Reply | More ]

OP: perhaps - but this mom is a very hard working single parent ... she's in real estate and can have a crazy schedule - thus, the reason why I get her voice mail so often. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a hardworking single parent too. That only gives you so much of an out. You are being nice about it, but you can't have open-ended playdates, so.... [ Reply | More ]

Next time say - " hmmm...we're really not free for a playdate unless you can be 100% sure you can be here by 5 pm to get her because I have plans." If it happens again, no more playdates at your apartment [ Reply | More ]
