Are you sure he needs that type of therapy? Was there a trauma? If it's behavior issues OT can really help with sepf regulation and focus. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. He is extremely smart, but hyper sensitive, difficult to re direct and occasionally explosive. I am not handling him well, and although he is not easy, I am probably making the situation worse. DH and I don't get a long very well which may be contributing. I really want someone to help him, but to also help us do better. [ Reply | More ]

^^^as for trauma, we had a babysitter in early years whom we found out was quite easily angered and mean (nanny cam after getting a report from a friend who saw them out in the nabe). [ Reply | More ]

you are welcome. good luck. can i also suggest good reading material? i taught kids with a lot of problems and these books helped the most- they helped me help the kids with dignity and respect, being kind yet firm. [ Reply | More ]

^^^^the challenge of parenthood, by rudolf driekurs. as well as children , the challenge, by the same guy. and p;ositive discipline by jane nelson. she has several positive discipline books out that are age sepcific. get the age specific one and the one entitled positive discipline. all her books are based on dreikurs' work. I am the mom who told you about dreikurs. what i did was highlight the most important parts of the book and asked dh to read just that. which he did. he still does not follow all of the suggestions but what dreikurs says is that it does not really matter. your son will know what to expect from you. there is not much you can do about your dh. he explains it very well. i have a hard time keeping my mouth shut with dh but if i did, things would be fine anyway, maybe better. dreikurs is the best. you will really like it. it takes time to practice it. i even had notes up on the wall to remember what to say and do. that you are concerned means that you will make things better. good luck! have you read "your spirited child" or the out of sync child?is it possible he has sensory issues? my son is only 4, and he was having some aggressive behavior at school, and now he is doing OT for sensory issues and his behavior has done a 180 [ Reply | More ]

thanks again. part of the problem is that dh blames me for the behavior as it is happening, often yelling at me that I am handling dc wrong, and saaying I am not punishing adequately. I feel I cannot even think while its going on. we have discussed it outside of the difficult moments, dh agrees to step back, and then the moment something happens, it recurs all over again. it is having a terrible effect, and I am at the end of my rope. You'll find that dreikurs does not suggest punishment at all. you will just get retaliation fromyour child, or revenge, or retreat. you can find the book on ABE books for about a dollar. it is very, very respectful to children and explains why children are different from how they were years ago (ie well-behaved). it will really help you, i am sure. any by the way, if you follow dreikurs' suggestions, things will first get worse before they get better. your son will feel like a fish out of water with the change and will test you. [ Reply | More ]
