Curious what people's reaction would be to this: I am sole breadwinner of my family, just got laid off, made $1 million last year. While I get severance, I am considering filing for umemployment benefits, which I am entitled to. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Actually, the severance agreement will almost certainly disqualify her for unemployment [ Reply | More ]

Those are not entitlement benefits. It is insurance you have paid for. [ Reply | More ]

Do you mean "not quite" because OP didn't cut the check to the insurance company herself? I don't have that narrow a view. OP paid for it with her labor. It was part of the compensation for OP's time and expertise at that job. Just like health benefits, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't say they were entitlement benefits, just that I am entitled to get them even while receiving severance [ Reply | More ]

yes you should. you've got the right. however, unemployment benefits, even the max you can get, are such a pittance i don't think it would be worth it to you unless you're really really really hurting. and i doubt you are. [ Reply | More ]

if you're entitled, then you're entitled, but you're going to feel really weird when you have to stand in line at the Labor office. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't, if you don't need the money. Just because you can do something, doesn't necessarily mean you have to... [ Reply | More ]
